I hate it when people say philosophy isn’t useful. Philosophy is very useful for:
• Being sentenced to death (Socrates)
• Being penniless and homeless (Diogenes)
• Being murdered by a mob (Hypatia)
• Being condemned as a heretic (Ockham)
• Being excommunicated by your religion (Spinoza)
• Being exiled from your country (Voltaire)
• Being reprimanded by the authorities (Kant)
• Being barred from teaching (Russell)
• Being removed from your position (Adorno)
• Being jailed for your beliefs (Gramsci)

All the philosophy students who pursued their passion made a wise decision.
Psychology grads are not doing too badly on the job market either.

Fantastic weekend at @NotreDame. We ended the event last night with a two hour panel of tributes to Karl by his students, colleagues, and friends. He is and will be missed.
NAKS Midwest study group met @NotreDame and featured special sessions in honor of Prof. Karl Ameriks, who taught for decades at ND and died this past April. Karl was a kind and generous mentor to many. A deep loss for Kant and German Idealism scholarship. historyofphilosophy.nd.edu/n…

great talk on the Ding an Sich by @sturmundstang earlier today at the @NAKantSociety Biennial in Montreal.
Nicholas Stang @UofT on "How to Think about Things in Themselves" (answer: consistently, categorically, nonschematically, and maybe a little analogically, but above all relentlessly, and accompanied with a gloriously detailed handout)
Fascinating talk with a very controversial thesis, caused a lot of discussion
Maya Krishnan @UChicago on whether the principle of sufficient reason can indeed motivate the principle of complete determination (Krishnan argued that it can't!).
When I was president (2020 to 2023) we almost doubled our membership, overhauled the website, hired a tech person, but ended up with a deficit. Daniel and Robert Clewis made some hard choices but have succeeded in balancing the budget, putting NAKS on sound financial footing.
