From the Holy See Press Office: "Pope Leo XIV has exercised his right to vote as a United States citizen, whenever he was eligible to do so. The Holy See Press Office confirms that in keeping with this long-standing practice of civic participation, he has submitted his mail-in ballot in Chicago. The Holy Father has also confirmed that, during his years of residence in Peru he exercised his right to vote whenever he was eligible to do so. The Holy Father expresses his belief in the right and the duty of citizens to participate in democratic processes."

The dam removals that get the most press tend to be superlative western ones, like the Klamath & Elwha—big rivers, big fish. For @bioGraphic, I wrote about the equally vital, under-the-radar projects restoring eastern streams, one old mill dam at a time. biographic.com/death-by-a-th…

Lord of Life, You have given us the gift of water, source of fruitfulness, freshness, and hope. It quenches thirst, nourishes the earth, and heals wounds. We see with pain so many brothers and sisters who lack clean water, who walk for miles to find it, who become ill due to its scarcity. Forgive us for turning it into a commodity, forgetting that it is a universal gift, a right without borders, meant for all your children. Let’s #PrayTogether at popesprayer.va/praywiththepo…

I'm writing with love for the landscape and people of Southwest Louisiana who have been designated as the next site for the world’s largest space port at the hands of SpaceX. Some photographs from the state that is so often used as a sacrifice zone for the rest of the US.

It is with deep concern that I am following the developments in Venezuela. The good of the beloved Venezuelan people must prevail over every other consideration. This must lead to the overcoming of violence, and to the pursuit of paths of justice and peace. I pray for all this, and I invite you to pray too, entrusting our prayer to the intercession of Our Lady of Coromoto, and to Saints José Gregorio Hernández and Carmen Rendiles. #PrayTogether

It’s not a “buyout”. Media keeps calling it a “buyout” but that’s not the offer. Their offer is to get public servants to agree now to resign in the fall, but they keep working full time virtually & get paid for the work. That’s not a “buyout”. I can think of another word though.
The Trump administration is reportedly offering buyouts to federal employees, with at least seven months pay, if they accept the offer by Feb. 6. Those who resign will get paid with benefits and be exempted from all applicable in-person work requirements until September 30.
