Andrew

Padres are paying ~$4.5M for Ray. His rest of season projection is 0.5 fWAR which is ~$4.5M, so $0M surplus value. The Padres traded a 45 FV pitcher and 40+ FV position player. According to Fangraphs prospect valuations, that's $17.5M. A pretty big overpay by Preller. #Padres

(2/2) The Cubs are paying ~$7.5M for Gausman. His rest of season projection is 1 fWAR, so call it $10M for consistency. That's $2.5M of surplus. They traded two 35+ FV position players. According to Fangraphs prospect valuations, that's $4M. Not really a good look for Preller.

James Wood and CJ Abrams have more fWAR (5.0) than all Padres position players combined (4.9).

Cristopher Sánchez has 2.2 fWAR in May after his start today. That's more than 5 teams (BAL, HOU, WSN, ATH, COL) have from their SP all season.

The lowest ERA by a SP (minimum 10 IP) in MLB belongs to a Dodger, but it isn't Ohtani, Yamamoto, or Glasnow, it's Wrobleski.

Two years later and #1 Jackson Holliday might be the worst player out of this absolutely stacked FanGraphs 2024 preseason top 10 prospect list .

If the Reds make the playoffs, the field will include the three teams with the lowest hard-hit% (CLE, SD, CIN) and the four teams with the lowest barrel% (CLE, MIL, CIN, SD).

Randy Vasquez with some intriguing velocity gains.

The Padres have now scored 8 ER in 51.2 IP (1.39 ERA) against the last 8 left-handed SP they've faced.

The Rockies are on pace to allow more than 1000 runs, which hasn't happened since 1999, when the (guess who?) Rockies allowed 1028 runs.

Sac bunting in the 3rd inning against the best or second best offense in baseball isn't a winning strategy

O'Hearn is t-2nd in fielding run value. Arraez is tied for 3rd worst in FRV. Since the Padres traded for O'Hearn, he's started at 1B four times while Arraez has gotten 13 starts.

Adrian Morejon has 1.9 fWAR, best in baseball among RP. That's equal to or better than 12 teams total RP fWAR.

Skenes, Skubal, and Wheeler combined for 28 strikeouts and 2 walks in 18 innings today. They also combined to give up 5 home runs and allow 10 earned runs.

The Padres have officially given Maldonado more PA this season than the 41-win White Sox did last year.

The more things change...
