As with anything, there are many things that are overhyped in Bitcoin. BCEs are no different. But I'd say that the biggest issue isn't that they're overhyped, the biggest issue is that BCE founders often don't know what they're getting into. Building a BCE isn't building a company. It's grassroots work. And that sort of work, by definition is a lifetime commitment, for no financial reward. People wanting to build BCEs thinking they'll exit and hand it over in 2 - 3 years, that's the bigger issue.

Six months ago, the South African Treasury and Reserve Bank published draft rules that would have made every bitcoin payment in a township circular economy a "capital flow" - merchants forced to declare BTC within 30 days, then ask permission to spend it. - Tourists' self-custody tips? Unclear. - Companies? Banned outright. Even sending your own bitcoin to your own wallet counted as an "export of capital" - but bringing it home was prohibited. This week, after thousands of comments and a unified industry revolt, the SA Govt backed down and promised a rewrite. The story isn't over. The new draft isn't published yet. They will try again.
