I’ve had a fascinating day comparing the application of #herballeys on two contrasting farms in the Peak District. One dairy and one beef, one grazing and one housed (dairy was the grazier). Both performing well with plenty of forage, despite the dry weather. Learned loads!

Today, we did a thing! After nearly a year of toing & froing we launched a new partnership between @farm_succession Alliance & @CLAtweets. We’ll provide CLA members with direct access to our team of independent professional facilitators to help tackle farm succession discussions

Day 1 @cerealseventuk was a mix of sunshine & rain, mud & hard-baked brash. Friends & colleagues, speaking & listening. A success I’d say & I’m looking forward to another day, tomorrow. Great to be working with colleagues @succession_alliance presenting on the @nfyfc stand.

I had a great day on a clients farm in the Borders where we were sampling soils & dodging showers, yesterday. What did we find out? Forage yield & nutritional value can be improved by 10-20% with changes to management, one-off interventions & some investment Ito infrastructure.

Much has changed since a much younger me was featured in the Farmers Weekly on this day in 2002. I have more grey hair & my belt is on a different hole but dairy farmers are taking biosecurity more seriously than they were 24 years ago. Bio security shouldn’t be overlooked.

I’m excited to be working with colleagues in the @succession_alliance to deliver the opening presentation in the @nfyfc stage at @cerealseventuk this year. Family Farm Succession is such an important topic at the moment and it’s rarely an easy conversation.

After a busy day, on Wednesday, I found myself back in Nottinghamshire, ready to deliver the second session in my Finance for Farmers course. It was a deep dive into using Gross Margins, this week. Next weeks session will be all about understanding and using Annual Accounts.

The stats say it all. With an average of 31 deaths & 23000 serious injuries annually, our industry’s the most dangerous to work in so I’m more than happy to be supporting the organisations who are hosting the #farmsafety event @newarkshowground. Say “Hi” to me if you’re there too

This may not be the finest piece of hedge laying but it’s my piece of hedge laying! There’s something very calming about practicing a skill that one learnt over 4 decades ago. It calms the mind and distracts me from the worries of the World. It’s well worth the investment of time
