So you get the Pokémon dub, the sailor moon dub, card-fucking-captors, because that's the assumption on how you sell japanese stuff to Americans - make it American. Games were part of this too. The Working Designs Saturday-morning-cartoon loc style was a part of this thinking.

In the early days of JP-EN loc, the perception, rightly or wrongly, was that US audiences - and by extension, all EN audiences - would violently reject anything that was too new or unfamiliar to them. My personal theory is that this is a consequence of the early dubs of anime...

A lot of anti-loc people don't want to hear this, but stock phrases like onegai-shimasu and yoroshiku are so ubiquitous in Japanese that any translation HAS to go past the words to the specific intent behind them in that specific moment. They simply must vary.
it’s interesting to me that a lot of subtle lines in the Japanese dialogue in Godzilla Minus Zero are spelled out in the subtitles. Like, “onegai shimasu” being translated as “you’re in charge”. I wonder to what degree that reflects an assumption about the audience.

Two people meet for the first time. They both say Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu to each other. "Nice to meet you" A subordinate gives a presentation to his project team at work "Yoroshiku onegaishimasu" "Thank you for your time" "Please treat me well" doesnt capture either situation

Deleted that post. No one is capable of controlling their online rage long enough to read literally the first reply explaining it wasn't real. Just wanted to catch a German, man.

Gonna delete that tweet in a few hours if I haven't angled my German because people are taking it seriously and I feel bad.
Alright let's see if this works

One of the best to ever do it and one of very few who believed - like myself - that it was better to engage actively with our audiences. We exchanged words briefly a few times here and i always came away feeling like I learned something. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

There's a German guy on here who WILL NOT miss an opportunity to A) Tell everyone how great his personal Japan life is & B) diligently dismiss/interrogate any and all negative comments about Japan. I'm honestly tempted to try summon him.

Japanese voice actors, especially in anime, do this little exhalation at the end of most sentences. In Japanese you barely notice it unless you're looking for it. A big obstacle casting EN actors here is habits like that. It sounds bizarre in English.
I think a lot of people probably aren't aware of how rigidly Japanese voice acting sticks to what it knows. As soon as you want to do something a little unusual no one knows what to do, which is a shame because if you look, like they did here, talent is everywhere.

I haven't played OoT so no idea about its quality but it's good to finally see the onus for EN vo quality finally falling where it belongs. EN actors have improved massively over the years, directors are still largely stuck in 1999.
been listening to ocarina reviews and every clip further vindicates my disdain of modern english voice direction. something has got to change man how does anyone find this listenable

Re America; idc if you have right leaning or left leaning views but at the end of the day if your politics is based on hurting people rather than helping people, that's got a clock, and it looks like - for now at least - that clock ran out.
