[1/18] Question: What do you do with a broken iMac that's over a decade old? The conventional answer is obvious: "throw it away and buy a new one" But I had other ideas... An iMac '09 in 2020, a thread:

In 1952, an English teacher named Cecil Dormand secretly paid for a dirt-poor 11-year-old to take a drama course. He never told him and the boy didn’t find out until decades later. By then, he was a knight, that little boy’s name was Patrick Stewart. He was born into a poor family in Mirfield, a small mill town in Yorkshire and his father came home from World War II a violent man, and he was violent toward Patrick’s mother. Young Patrick learned exactly when to step between his father’s fist and his mother. An English teacher put a copy of Shakespeare in his hand and told him to get up and perform. He never stopped and left school at 15. By 19 he was completely bald... most agencies told him he'd never make it because of that. In 1987, the LA Times called him an “unknown British Shakespearean actor” when he was cast as Captain Picard. Then he became one of the most famous faces on Earth. You’ve probably heard that part. Here’s the part you haven’t: He spent decades as a patron of Refuge, sheltering women and children from domestic violence. But he never stopped trying to understand his father. He dug up a 1940 newspaper clipping that said his dad had come home with severe shell shock. He went to France and walked the ground where his father’s unit was pinned down under bombing for hours. He learned his father had PTSD, and nobody ever helped him. So Patrick became an ambassador for Combat Stress, a charity that helps veterans. In 2013, a young woman at a Texas convention told him she was a survivor of domestic violence. He asked, “My dear, are you okay?” Then he hopped off the stage, held her, and told her: “You never have to go through that again, you’re safe now.” At Dragon Con, a Make-A-Wish girl dressed as Spock came to meet him. 2,000 people were waiting for him to speak... he sat down and talked with her for 15 minutes, making all of them wait. He told her that since they were friends now, whenever she saw him on screen she could wave and say, “Hello Patrick.” After 9/11, he felt helpless, so he brought his one-man A Christmas Carol back to Broadway for a full week of charity shows. He played every character himself and donated every cent. In 2019 he did it again, and every dollar went to feeding hungry New Yorkers. In 2017, he fostered a pit bull named Ginger, who had been rescued from a dogfighting ring. She was his first dog in more than 50 years. He couldn’t bring her home to England, so he found her a family. Then he kept fostering more. When he said he was done with Star Trek so many people told him the show had gotten them through the hardest times of their lives. So he wanted to see if Picard could do it one more time. Rest in Peace, Sir Patrick 🖖

The thing that annoys me most about this is the insistence that the advertised time is the actual departure time instead of the final-boarding time. It’s even worse with air travel, the actual time something departs isn’t useful information.
What is the logic behind this? Is it just meant to screw over those of us who tend to arrive at the last minute? If I get there at 9:58 and my train leaves at 10, I should be able to get on.

Broke: Call the country “Turkey” Woke: Rename the country “Türkiye” Bespoke: Rename the bird “Türkiye”
The idea that we are now supposed to call it “Türkiye” is rather ridiculous. It’s as goofy as if the Germans demanded we call them Deutschland and we demanded they spell “Kanada” with a C. You don’t get to dictate your name in foreign languages, Turkey.

Could you please stop throwing ALL EVERYTHING SECURITY UPDATES at me today. Pls nothing else break.
Not just PHP. Node.js has also announced security releases for October 21, with HIGH-severity vulnerabilities affecting its 26.x, 24.x and 22.x release lines. If you run either stack in production, keep an eye on official advisories and apply patches promptly. Security maintenance doesn't stop at your application code. Your runtime matters too. a critical vulnerability was just discovered in PHP. the language that runs 80% of the internet severity score: 9.2 out of 10. that’s about as bad as it gets what can an attacker do with this? take full admin control of a server. steal entire databases. passwords, credit cards, payment histories. plant malware and use the server to attack other systems but here’s the terrifying part that most people missed the moment the patch drops tonight attackers are expected to use AI to reverse engineer what was fixed within 15 minutes 15 minutes. that’s the window between the fix going live and automated attacks launching worldwide every online store, booking site, and corporate system running PHP that doesn’t update in those 15 minutes becomes a target this isn’t just a developer problem. if you’ve ever signed up to a website, entered your card details, or created an account online your data is sitting on servers that might be vulnerable right now and someone just publicly dropped the working exploit on twitter before the patch was even ready. gave every attacker on earth a head start engineers worldwide are pulling all-nighters tonight to patch their systems before the attacks begin change your passwords on any service that matters to you. enable 2FA everywhere. and watch out for fake “maintenance” or “password reset” emails over the next few days the internet is about to have a very long night

I am convinced the whole “picky bits” phenomenon is a marketing psyop and absolutely nobody in England has ever used the term prior to this year. SUPERMARKETS ARE GASLIGHTING US!
While The Telegraph has deemed 'picky bits' "the most revolting phrase in the English language", more Britons have a positive view of the term (43%) than a negative one (25%), with 31% neutral Net positivity towards... TV licence to be extended to anything your eyeballs might perceive while your eyelids are open within the British Isles.
TV license to be extended to memories and dreams of characters you might've heard of through cultural osmosis.

There *are* challenges around porn, but absolutely no evidence that banning it will fix anything. I would prefer to live in a society where we help people, not one where we criminalise everything we don’t like.

The question here is “who is this protecting?” Laws should only exist to protect people from the excesses of others. Otherwise it’s a pointless waste of parliamentary time and taxpayer money.

The heated social media spat about the tiger killing the young man is mainly between mad Americans who hate disabled people and mad Americans who love killing endangered species. The vast majority of British people are upset about the man and relieved the tiger wasn't euthanised.

BREAKING: 🇫🇷 A major cyberattack has hit supermarket refrigeration systems across France, reportedly causing fresh and frozen food to spoil after hackers remotely manipulated temperature controls. According to BFMTV, the attack began overnight from Sunday into Monday, targeting older versions of refrigeration-control software supplied by Danish company Danfoss. The attackers allegedly exploited the systems’ defrosting function, forcing refrigeration equipment to heat continuously instead of keeping products cold. Temperatures were reportedly set as high as 50°C, destroying entire stocks of food within hours. Several major supermarket chains have been affected, including Intermarché, Super U and E.Leclerc. Metro stores and independent businesses, including butcher shops also have been impacted. Around 150 Intermarché stores are reportedly affected, according to industry sources cited by BFMTV. The full number of affected locations remains unclear. The financial damage is already significant. In Haguenau, Alsace, an Intermarché store reportedly lost its entire frozen-food stock, worth approximately €50,000. A nearby Super U allegedly had to discard both fresh and frozen products, with losses estimated at €220,000. An E.Leclerc store in the same town was also affected, although its losses had not yet been calculated. The combined losses reported at the Intermarché and Super U stores in Haguenau alone amount to around €270,000. Nationwide damage could reach several million euros. Intermarché reportedly confirmed the incident in an internal communication, warning that several stores had suffered losses of frozen products. Coopérative U also acknowledged the attack and established crisis teams to assist affected stores and coordinate with refrigeration specialists. Technical investigations are ongoing, and the full extent of the damage has yet to be established. Authorities and companies are still working to determine the full circumstances of the attack. The identity of the perpetrators has not been confirmed.

Ah, now I get it. I thought the AI catastrophe meant a model escaping its sandbox, launching nukes or hacking the power grid. Turns out it spots the AI debt bubble, shorts its own creators and crashes the financial system with trading bots. The singularity is a margin call.

Babe, wake up, new conspiracy theory just dropped!
There’s a non-zero chance that Zack Polanski is a Lib Dem Trojan horse who worked his way up the Green Party, built up a false sense of momentum, tanked it completely, all to restore the Lib Dems as the clear coalition option for Labour in the event of a hung parliament

In no particular order, these are probably the seminal albums of my youth. Lightning Seeds’ Dizzy Heights and Radiohead’s OK Computer were close contenders. Honourable mentions go to Oasis - Morning Glory, Mansun - Attack of the Grey Lantern, and Kula Shaker - K.
In no particular order. TMWSIY is mostly a placeholder for Phish in general. Double-Nirvana is kinda lame but they do just sorta both have to be there. Honorable mentions to Metallica, Metallica and Appetite for Destruction, GnR.

I've been pondering this since I made this post and had some thoughts: * If you turn up to interview with a coffee (even an iced one), I won't care. * If you turn up with a kebab/pizza/etc, that'll raise eyebrows. [cont]
Just to wade in on the current ridiculous discourse, I’m a Millennial and a hiring manager. If you turn up to an interview with me and bring a coffee, I am not going to even bat an eyelid. Because making hiring decisions based on coffee is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.

Similarly: * If you turn up in jeans/T-shirt/hoodie, I won't care. * If you turn up in a mankini & gimp mask, don't expect to be hired. So, clearly there are lines about what is or isn't culturally acceptable, even for me. [cont]

This leaves the inevitable question "Is there a clear line between reasonability, or do different people just have different thresholds?" [end]
