So how did the Northumbrian King / Saint Oswald end up with so many churches dedicated to him in the German speaking Alpine lands? And where do a polyglot raven, mermaids and cold baths fit in? Interesting listen...

Lots of Alpine churches are dedicated to a king from northern England. Why? Good question. This week on the Reichs & Republics podcast, we explore the strange medieval cult of St Oswald, featuring an incorruptible arm, a talking raven, mermaids and a very chilly approach to marital chastity π¦ββ¬ππ§ββοΈ

Whilst this might be true, the real objection is that it is barbaric.
As my friend @Mpolymer says, in terms of actual practicality, the idea of giving martyrs a massive audience to martyr themselves seems very unwise. It is not a deterrent. It will actually become a recruiting tool for terrorists.
