Fake News Alert! Fake News: Subhash Chandra was allowed to pay 6.5 crore against his liability of 22,000 crore. Truth: - Total claim was only 3992 crore. - Of 3992 crore, 620 crore settled and 1063 crore will be paid by the borrower entities. - Repayment plan favoured by 81% creditors - Borrower entity for whom Chandra provided personal guarantees have already re paid 43000 crore. Congress has become a fake news Factory! It does not even know that NCLT proceedings are presided over by a former High Court Judge !

Subhash Chandra did not “settle ₹22,000 crore for ₹6.5 crore because he was a BJP MP.” Here is what the NCLT file actually says. A post is circulating: Subhash Chandra took ₹22,006 crore from banks, willfully defaulted, walked into NCLT, and was asked to pay ₹6.5 crore. Then the punchline — he was a BJP Rajya Sabha MP, so of course he got away with it. The order is real. The numbers are roughly real. The story built on top of them is not. This was not Chandra personally borrowing ₹22,006 crore and then refusing to repay it. It was personal insolvency of a personal guarantor. Indiabulls Housing Finance moved against him over a guarantee for a ₹170-crore loan to Vivek Infracon. NCLT admitted that plea in April 2024. After that, other lenders who held his guarantees for Essel Group entities filed claims. Those claims added up to about ₹22,006.57 crore. That figure is stacked guarantee exposure. It is not cash he withdrew into a personal account. IBC personal insolvency does not ask, “What would look fair on Twitter?” It asks, “What is left in this person’s estate, and will the required majority of creditors accept a plan based on that?” The Resolution Professional’s valuation found his personal estate was worth less than the ₹6.5 crore on offer. ₹6.25 crore for creditors. ₹25 lakh for process costs. Creditors holding 80.81% of the voting share approved the plan in November 2024. NCLT’s third member approved it after a split verdict. The tribunal said it cannot replace creditors’ commercial decision with its own embarrassment about the haircut. It also said rejecting the plan could push him into bankruptcy and leave dissenters with even less, including against the companies that actually borrowed the money. LIC Housing Finance voted no. Its admitted claim of ₹1,322 crore would get about ₹38 lakh. That is ugly. It is also how majority-driven insolvency works. Dissenters get bound. The “he never paid anyone” line is the other fiction. After IL&FS, Essel was sitting on a debt mountain near ₹20,000 crore. Promoter shares in Zee were heavily pledged. Lenders were one sell-off away from wrecking the stock and the group. Chandra’s family sold down the Zee holding — the asset he called the crown jewel — and other businesses to repay lenders. In 2021 he said 91.2% of debt to 43 lenders across 110 accounts had been settled. That is not the biography of a man who took the money and vanished. Was he a BJP MP who used the party to fix NCLT? No. He was an Independent Rajya Sabha MP from Haryana, 2016 to 2022, elected with BJP support. He lost his 2022 re-election bid. The insolvency was admitted in 2024. The plan was cleared in 2026. He was already out of the House. Now the part a defence should not hide. Creditors pointed to old net-worth certificates of ₹40,000 crore-plus against a disclosed net worth near ₹32 crore in this process. That gap is the real scandal-shaped hole in the story. NCLT said the difference justified questions, then said IBC does not require a forensic audit before a plan can be approved. Some yes-votes were also alleged to be friendly entities. If that is proven on appeal, the 80% vote looks a lot weaker. So the honest position is not “nothing to see here.” The honest position is this: He over-guaranteed group debt. The group hit a pledged-share crisis. He sold most of the family’s control in Zee to repay the bulk of lenders. What remained were personal guarantees sitting on a thin personal estate. A statutory majority of creditors took ₹6.5 crore rather than fight over assets valued even lower. That is a brutal haircut and a serious design problem in personal-guarantor IBC. It is not proof that one former Independent MP stole ₹22,000 crore and got a political discount. If you want a better rule, demand mandatory forensic tracing when historical net worth and the present estate do not match, and a hard look at related-party votes. That argument is adult. The viral version is just arithmetic without the file.

Why is the West not curious on the great Indian 🇮🇳 civilization? This week Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Norway. The government rolled out the red carpet. King Harald invited for lunch. All bigwigs of Norwegian business turned up. This is of course as it should be at such a historic visit. Rather different was media. No curiosity, no real attempt to understand India. When the third most powerful man in the world visits Norway, you may expect some real interest? An attempt to understand the world’s third largest economy, a global green leader, one of the world’s brightest civilizations?? It’s not that Norway is overrun with visit at this level. Last Indian top visit was Indira Gandhi in 1983. Last Chinese president visit was 1996, last American president was 2009. Here are some taste bits from Norwegian media: * Aftenposten the largest newspaper printed a caricature of Modi as a snake charmer, many found it racist and derogatory. The accompanying article (written by an otherwise brilliant journalist) described Modi as a “slightly annoying man” and simply showcased that India is not high on the papers reading lists. * Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK), the state broadcaster, explained “why prime minister Støre is clearing his desk to receive Modi”. From everyone outside Norway I got exactly the opposite question: Why did Modi use his valuable time in such a small and insignificant place? * Dagsavisen, a left of center daily, sent a young journalist to throw questions after Modi - claiming that India is 157 on a global democracy ranking. When a ranking is so contrary to common sense - why doesnt she ask those who created the ranking why they spread such nonsense? I am not aware of one Norwegian journalist closely following India. NOT ONE! How can the public learn more? Unless you believe democracy only fits a handful of small, homogenous, ultra rich western nations, India is the miracle of democracy. The large, complex, lingustically and religiously diverse nation with many poor people - which has etablished a vibrant democracy and is much less violent than Europe or America. India can in fact make a claim to be the worlds most homegrown and impressive democracy. We are entering the Asian century. Unless we Europeans become more curious - to civiliazation, history, politics and economy in the Global South - we will become the big losers of history.

JUST IN: The United States has not built a new oil refinery in fifty years. Fifty. The last one broke ground when Nixon was president and oil cost $3 a barrel. Trump just announced a $300 billion deal to build one. The largest energy investment in American history. Port of Brownsville, Texas. Groundbreaking Q2 2026. Binding 20-year offtake agreement. Processing American shale crude. Thousands of jobs in South Texas. “The cleanest refinery in the world.” The lead investor is Indian. Reliance Industries, controlled by the Ambani family with a 50.39% promoter stake, operators of the Jamnagar complex in Gujarat, the largest single-site refinery on Earth, are the confirmed major foreign partner. Trump thanked them on Truth Social as “our partners in India, and their largest privately held Energy Company” for their “tremendous investment.” Now hold two facts simultaneously. India’s Reliance Industries is investing billions in an American refinery to process American shale oil for American energy dominance. India’s government, led by Modi, is simultaneously importing over 40% of its crude from Russia at war-discounted prices, rejected the US “permission” framing for a 30-day Russian oil waiver on 7th March (“India has never depended on permission from any country”), and continues buying Iranian crude via Chabahar port logistics. The same country. The same week. Building American energy independence with one hand. Buying Russian crude with the other. This is not hypocrisy. This is the Modi Doctrine operating at its highest expression. Multi-alignment means India does not choose sides. It chooses deals. QUAD membership for security. Russian crude for energy. Chabahar for Iranian access. Reliance capital for American refining. Israeli defence technology for military modernisation. Gulf remittances for 10 million workers. No formal alliance with any power. Maximum leverage with all of them. Every relationship is transactional. Every commitment is calibrated. Every contradiction serves a constituency. Trump needs the refinery because the Iran war just proved that 50 years without building one left America dependent on foreign refining capacity for products its own shale produces. The Strait of Hormuz did not just close oil transit. It closed the refined product supply chain that feeds American gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and petrochemicals. Building domestic refining capacity is the structural response to Actuarial Warfare: if chokepoints can be closed by insurance spreadsheets, the only defence is not needing the chokepoint. Ambani needs the deal because Reliance’s Jamnagar complex processes Gulf crude that transits Hormuz. The same Strait that is mined, uninsured, and defended by 31 autonomous IRGC commands. Diversifying into American shale refining hedges against the exact crisis currently paralysing Reliance’s primary feedstock route. This is not philanthropy. It is the world’s largest refiner buying insurance that no P&I club can provide. The war created the crisis. The crisis created the deal. The deal was signed by the country whose Prime Minister was just given “permission” to buy Russian oil and told America it never asked. Fifty years. One war. One phone call. And the billionaire who builds it is from the country Washington cannot decide whether to sanction or celebrate. Full analysis here. open.substack.com/pub/shanak…
