Let's put this debate to rest as well.(1/2🧵) One of Re:Zero's greatest strengths in its portrayal of the Seven Deadly Sins is precisely the way each sin becomes a distorted view of love, identity, desire, and even virtue itself. Rather than treating them merely as concepts associated with moral flaws, the series portrays them as human impulses taken to such an extreme that they distort one's relationship with others and with reality itself. I'll briefly explain how each sin is interpreted in this story, without going into particularly in depht analysis. The only exception is Pride, since I don't know anything about it yet. LUST Represented by Capella, her Lust isn't limited to simple physical attraction, but extends to the body, identity, and the way a person is perceived. Her ability to take on different appearances, including those of people someone loves, allows us to connect Lust to the desire to possess the image of love without necessarily respecting the person behind it. She is, in every sense, the embodiment of the absence of love. In short, Lust. GREED Represented by Echidna and Regulus. Regulus can be seen as Greed taken to the extreme, because possessing what he desires isn't enough for him. He also wants the world to recognize his demands as legitimate. His relationship with rights, possession, and other human beings transforms Greed into a demand for absolute control. He considers every limit imposed by other people's desires a personal offense. Echidna, on the other hand, offers a subtler contrast. Her Greed doesn't manifest itself through material possessions, but through knowledge, answers, and understanding. The desire to know may seem like a positive quality, but it becomes disturbing when knowledge itself takes precedence over the people involved and the consequences of obtaining it. Her thirst for knowledge therefore literally surpasses the value of, and respect for, human life. (u can see also greed if) SLOTH Represented by Betelgeuse, Sloth is particularly interesting precisely because he seems like anything but lazy. He's tireless, agitated, and obsessed with his mission. His portrayal suggests that Sloth doesn't necessarily have to mean things such as physical inactivity. It can also manifest as the abandonment of independent judgment, when an individual completely delegates their will to a higher principle and convinces themselves that all they need to do is carry out its commands. Frenetic activity, therefore, doesn't exclude inner Sloth. ENVY Here, it's worth distinguishing what we know from what we can interpret, because the mystery surrounding Satella remains important. Her portrayal of Envy is connected to an overwhelming feeling involving love, the desire for closeness, and an all consuming relationship with another person. It's interesting to ask when the desire to be loved stops recognizing the other person's freedom. The point isn't to reduce Satella to a simple emotion but to observe how Envy can intertwine with love until it becomes difficult to distinguish affection from an absolute need. GLUTTONY Gluttony becomes particularly effective when it isn't interpreted merely as physical hunger. The powers connected to names, memories, and identity make this sin something much deeper. It's not simply about consuming something,it's as though other people's very existence becomes material to be assimilated. Hunger invades what makes each individual unique and recognizable. Gluttony thus becomes a desire that isn't satisfied with what a person possesses but it wants to devour what that person is. Furthermore, it's fascinating to see how each sibling embodies a different aspect of the sin of Gluttony. Lye Batenkaitos is considered the Gourmet, representing a more sophisticated and refined aspect of appetite. In fact, he becomes specifically obsessed with Ram because he's become fixated on his relentless pursuit of taste. 🧵
