Rest in peace, Sir Patrick Stewart, who passed away today at the age of 86. Perhaps best known for his iconic role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Stewart spent the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown sharing videos of himself reading Shakespeare’s sonnets. Notably, he was once joined by his neighbor’s cat Glenn who appeared unimpressed by Sonnet 40. #cat #catlovers #RIP

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. β€œBut Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to riskβ€”getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

This mailman started writing fake letters for a dog because he could not stand seeing her disappointed. Back in 2016, Australian mail carrier Martin Studer had one very enthusiastic customer, a golden retriever named Pippa, who every morning would wait by the gate for Martin, gently take the family’s mail from his hand, and proudly carry it back inside as if collecting the post were her official job. On days when there was no mail, Pippa would be left waiting with nothing to collect, and Martin could not bear to disappoint her, so he started carrying blank postal cards in his bag and writing β€œMail for Pippa” on them [1]. Whenever there was no real post, he would hand Pippa one of the fake letters so she could still complete her daily mission. One mailman, one golden retriever, and zero real letters were needed to make her day. Sometimes the smallest act of kindness can mean everything to a dog

Morning @maidstonebc The fish are dying again in South Park pond (I counted about 15). Please can someone put the pump on as a matter of urgency as there must be no oxygen in the water?

Our Shakespeare with Sheps performance came to the Faversham Brewery last week – and what a show it was! The @Changeling performed Much Ado About Nothing, adding in a sprinkling of Sheps references too. The tour is mostly performed outdoors, but they make an exception for usπŸ˜‰πŸŽ

Sports bar Sin Bin at Chatham Maritime got a big thumbs up on Sunday when influencer Big John came to a Soccer Aid fundraising night. He gave the menu his seal of approval & poured a pint from one of the new Beer Towers. A big thank you to him for coming down to the docksideπŸ‘Š

The fish are dying in South Park Pond, Maidstone. These dead ones, inc the big koi carp, were there this morning and tonight @maidstonebc - the pump installed last year isn’t even being used. It’s so sad. Please do something
