Mr Mourya, an Ambedkarite claims an inscription from a Buddhist “Arogya Vihar” in Patna proves Dhanvantari was a Buddhist doctor, and that the Dhanvantari is a later Brahmanical invention. Let’s check the evidence. What was actually found at Kumhrar, Patna: • A terracotta seal reading “Sri Arogya Vihare Bhikshu Sanghasya”: the infirmary of the monks’ community, dated to the 4th–5th century CE (Gupta period). • A potsherd from the same debris reading “(dha)nvantareh”, i.e. “of Dhanvantari”. The first syllable is a restoration. • Kenneth Zysk suggest this was the title of the hospital’s head physician, who practised in the surgical tradition named after Dhanvantari. So the monastery was using a name that was already famous. Dhanvantari in Brahmanical texts, centuries before Kumhrar: • The Vedic Grihyasutras prescribe daily offerings to Dhanvantari in the household Vaishvadeva rite (Ashvalayana 1.2.2, Shankhayana 2.14.4). Ashvalayana even mentions a separate sacrifice to him. Louis Gray traced the earliest allusion to the Atharvavedic Kaushika Sutra 74.6. The sutra period is roughly dated 400–200 BCE. • Manusmriti 3.85 lists him among the householder’s daily offerings • The Charaka Samhita (present form c. 1st century CE) calls surgeons “Dhanvantariyas”, the school of Dhanvantari. (It supports Kenneth’s theory) What Buddhist and Jain texts themselves say: • The Buddhist Milindapanha lists Dhammantari (Dhanvantari) among the ancient teachers of medicine, next to Narada and Angirasa. These are Brahmanical sages and deties, not monks. • The Jataka tradition remembers him as an old physician famed for curing snakebite. • The Jain Vipakasutra tells of a physician named Dhanvantari, master of every branch of medicine, condemned for prescribing meat. None of them treats him as a Buddhist monk. A physician at a 4th–5th century Buddhist hospital may well have carried the title “Dhanvantari”. But the figure that title honours was already receiving offerings in Vedic household ritual centuries earlier. The monks borrowed the name, not the other way round.
