At 16,000 feet, when most people are worrying about surviving the mountains, mountaineer Yogeshwari Bohare had another challenge to deal with: her period.
There were no sanitary pads, no pharmacy nearby and no other women around. With days still left on the expedition, she had to improvise.
Her solution? Folded tissue paper secured with medical tape, turned into a makeshift sanitary pad.
What followed was more than an unusual mountain survival hack. It exposed a reality women mountaineers often have to navigate, one that rarely finds a place in conversations about adventure sports.
After all, how do you prepare for an expedition that takes you thousands of feet above the ground when something as basic as menstrual hygiene isn't part of the plan?
Yogeshwari's experience raises a question worth asking: Are our mountains becoming more accessible to women, while the infrastructure to support them is still catching up?

Building safer, happier and more supportive classrooms!
In collaboration with Samagra Shiksha and with technical support from TISS SIMHA, UNICEF India hosted a three-day Master Trainers’ Training in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, to prioritize children’s mental health and psychosocial well-being in schools.
Over three days, educators from across eight districts engaged in interactive sessions focused on:
✨ Recognizing early signs of stress and emotional needs
✨ Building safe, trusting and inclusive classroom spaces
✨ Nurturing students' individual strengths and interests
When schools prioritize mental health, every child gets the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive without unnecessary pressure.

In the middle of a family’s worst heartbreak, one decision gave three other families a reason to hope.
Bilash Tanti Sharma, lovingly known as Shivani, from Madhya Pradesh’s Khapa Khurd village, was declared brain-dead after a road accident. While her family was grappling with an unimaginable loss, they chose to donate her organs to AIIMS Bhopal, helping save three lives.
There is something profoundly moving about a decision like this. A family facing the pain of losing someone they love chose to give other families a chance to hold on to someone they love. Their grief did not become any smaller, but their decision gave hope to people who desperately needed it.
In recognition of this extraordinary act, Madhya Pradesh Police accorded Shivani a guard of honour in her native village.
Shivani’s story leaves us with a powerful reminder: even when a life cannot be saved, the choice to donate organs can help other lives continue. And sometimes, in the deepest darkness a family can face, their decision becomes someone else’s light.

Young people are at the heart of safer communities and stronger child protection systems.
During her mission to Bhopal, Sheema Sen Gupta, UNICEF’s Global Director for Child Protection and Migration, engaged with care leavers, members of the Yuva Shakti Sangathan, adolescents, youth, community leaders and child protection stakeholders.
Through discussions on the Care Leavers Network and Bhopal’s Safe City Initiative, young people shared their experiences, priorities and vision for the future.
Their voices reinforced a powerful message: when children and young people are heard, empowered and given meaningful opportunities to participate, they become leaders of change, helping to build safer, more inclusive communities and stronger pathways to independent, dignified lives.
