Went to British Sugar’s Wissington factory today for a media briefing. Wouldn’t say we learned a huge amount more unfortunately, although not very surprisingly either. Here are some brief(?!) “highlights”:

Lots of adult #csfb present in the harvested 2023 crop, so collecting a sample from the sides of a trailer to go off to be tested for pyrethroid resistance. Tricky insects to get into a bag. Concerned about prospects for the 2024 osr crops already.

Winter #linseed in Warwickshire. Signs of recovery from the more damaged crops from February winds and some minor damage only. Crops will recover if given chance @PremiumCrops
Yellow rust can be found easily in some varieties across the county. Whilst a variety may have a good Yellow rust adult plant resistance rating, many varieties are still susceptible to juvenile Yellow rust. Please ensure you remain vigilant on a field by field basis.

1/2 Fly tipped rubbish found today @BassetlawDC were very unhelpful but did eventually contact the owner of the rubbish but took some serious pushing to do anything at all. Similar rubbish still outside the property. @NFUtweets @NFUNotts @wheat_daddy clear up costs will be ours.
Points to consider before applying post emergence herbicides for grassweed suppression. 1. Application of product - environmental temperature, forward speed, nozzle choice+ coverage 2. Grassweed species- Ryegrass, black-grass, brome spp. 3. Levels of expected resistance.
Light land cereal growers. The combination of frost heave and seed beds which were not rolled in the autumn has left some seed beds very fluffy. These will be particularly prone to manganese deficiency when crop growth speeds up as growing conditions improve.
Conditions are far from ideal at the moment but a great job for a snowy/wet, cold morning is to have a think about fertiliser application plans. Prioritise the fields which would benefit the most from a sensibly early fertiliser application when conditions improve.
Oilseed Rape growers, a reminder to stay vigilant in crops at the moment. CSFB larvae can be found quite easily in some areas of the country in leaf petioles. If you have any concerns regarding the numbers you’re finding please speak to your Arable Alliance consultant.
