From 2003 to 2004, we (EniObanke) ran a self-sponsored series called Word 'N' Sound at Jazzville, Yaba-Lagos, with support from the owner, Mr. Muyiwa Majekodunmi. It was the first-ever performance poetry series in Nigeria and featured poetry, dance, music and drama. Held on the last Friday of every month, each 3-hour session began with an open mic - during which anyone could come up and showcase their work - and then slowly segued through a variety of acts until a headliner hit the stage. Sometimes the event would close with all the artists coming together to do an unrehearsed performance. It was an exhilarating journey of discovery. Each week, a new talent was discovered and several have gone on to solid careers in literature, music, etc. We were forced to stop the series in 2004 due to a lack of funds. 22 years later, we are proud to bring Word 'N' Sound back at EMUfest 2026. Join us on Dec 5 for a sumptuous evening of poetic delight, sweet sounds, great food and fresh palmwine! The long list of performers includes 2 who featured in the original series back in 2003: the highly celebrated poet Akeem Lasisi and the multitalented Segun Adefila and his Royal Bards.
