Between the nursery and your garden, a plant spends a day or two in a box. How it’s packed decides how it arrives. Kind words from a customer this week

Meet Bruno, our new office dog. He’s 8 weeks old and already has four jobs: bare-root inspector, packing quality control, tree inspector and head of morale. Pay: biscuits. 🐶 #officedog #puppy

Kate from our customer services team made these for Halloween: dahlias, roses, crab apples, chillies, marigolds and salvias, in a pumpkin and a teapot. Plant roses and crab apples bare-root from November and you’ll be cutting your own next October.

Leaves down? Then it’s apple-pruning time, from now until early March. Start with dead, diseased and crossing wood, then open up the centre. Take no more than a fifth of the canopy each winter, or you’ll get a thicket of watershoots. Plums and cherries wait for summer.

Phone calls answered, updates sent, plants delivered when promised. Not glamorous, but it’s what you want from a nursery, and it’s good to hear it’s working. Thank you for the kind words.

Female winter moths can’t fly, so they walk up your fruit trees to lay eggs. A ring of tree grease up the trunk stops them. Grease the stake too, and get it on before November.
