In the Middle Ages, the Catholic Church dictated how couples were supposed to have sex. Any sex position other than the common man-on-top (missionary) was considered unnatural and sinful. The woman-on-top position was unacceptable because it negated the natural order of the male-female role. Anal and oral sex were sins because they could only be practised for pleasure, not procreation, which for the Church was the only purpose of sex. #HistoryVille

This is the same species that hunted and gathered on the African savanna with stone tools not so long ago. Now four members of their species are tracing a breathtaking path across the heavens, reaching over 250,000 miles from their grasslands. What curiosity does to a species.

Plants emit ultrasonic "cries" or popping sounds when stressed by drought, cutting, or other damage—sounds too high-pitched (typically 40–150 kHz) for human ears to detect. A landmark 2023 study from Tel Aviv University (led by Itzhak Khait, with collaborators including Lilach Hadany) revealed that plants like tomatoes and tobacco produce these airborne ultrasonic emissions in rapid bursts when deprived of water or physically injured. Healthy plants emit fewer than one sound per hour on average, but stressed ones can generate 30–50 distinct clicks per hour, peaking around days 5–6 of severe drought before subsiding as the plant desiccates. The primary mechanism appears to be cavitation: as water transport in the xylem struggles under tension, air bubbles form, expand, and collapse, releasing tiny acoustic bursts. These sounds propagate through the air (unlike earlier contact-based vibration recordings) and can be captured remotely with sensitive microphones in acoustic chambers or greenhouses. Machine learning models trained on the recordings successfully classified plant condition—distinguishing healthy from dehydrated or cut specimens, and even estimating dehydration severity—based solely on acoustic patterns. This suggests the emissions carry informative "distress signals." While earlier research linked ultrasonic acoustic emissions (UAEs) to cavitation in trees and drought-stressed wood, this work was groundbreaking for demonstrating airborne propagation from intact plants and potential ecological roles: nearby insects or animals might detect these cues to locate vulnerable hosts or avoid stressed areas. The findings hold exciting promise for precision agriculture: affordable acoustic sensors could monitor fields in real time, detecting water stress or damage early—long before visible wilting—enabling targeted irrigation, reduced water waste, and better adaptation to climate change-driven droughts. A single kiss can transfer tens of millions of bacteria between two people in just a few seconds; in fact, researchers estimate that nearly 80 million bacteria can be exchanged during a 10-second intimate kiss, as shown in a study published in Microbiome. The human mouth hosts more than 700 different bacterial species, forming a complex and dynamic oral microbiome. The study also found that kissing temporarily makes partners’ oral microbiomes more similar through the exchange of saliva and microbes, highlighting how everyday human interactions actively shape our microbiological ecosystems.
