For more than 16 years, @abbasz55 was my editor and during this period I found him throughly professional, a genuine team builder who consistently encouraged colleagues to undertake challenging assignments and always stood firmly behind his staff when it mattered. Most importantly, he has set an exceptionally high standard for how a journalist should resist government pressure and refuse to compromise. His retirement would leave behind a gap that will be hard to fill in today’s constrained media environment.
JP EXCLUSIVE: Zaffar Abbas is set to retire as Dawn’s editor by the end of 2026, concluding 16 years at the helm through the Dawn Leaks controversy and government advertising disputes. #ZaffarAbbas #Dawn #PakistanMedia #Journalism #JournalismPakistan journalismpakistan.com/dawn-…

Dawn editor Zaffar Abbas bows out after 16 years at the newspaper. I saw first hand his fearlessness during some very dark times. A rarity in Pakistani journalism, who didn't flinch in the face of pressure. Hat tip @abbasz55 and hope retirement means you finally visit London!

In undercover interviews, these men have told us they must make sure the shadow fleet tanker reaches its destination without being stopped by western nations as the ship passes through. In 2025, the vessels carried between $80 and $100 billion worth of oil.

Five of the six newspapers below have uniform content & identical display on front page. Only one newspaper is starkly different. That difference has made the difference

This is quite astonishing. Justice GS Patel and his family haven't just received idle threats. His daughter was physically assaulted in London and suffered a broken nose. All because of a judgement relating to Dawoodi Bohra succession. livelaw.in/top-stories/retir…

Absolutely horrified at what my friend Aditi and her family have been through. Here in the UK. She’s been threatened, assaulted, and then sent footage of said assaults in the mail with ridiculous ultimatums. Insanity.

The upshot? Essar soon owed VTB even more – and authorities in Cyprus are looking closely at whether it broke the rules. Essar says it has complied with all of the applicable sanctions at all times and that it is winding down its VTB relationship. source-material.org/essar-st…

At the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine, Essar owed $3.1 billion to VTB, the huge Kremlin-controlled Russian bank. Our latest investigation, with the Guardian, reveals that its response to sanctions on VTB was to shift the loans out of the EU from Cyprus to Mauritius.

I spoke with journalist @AtikaRehman about Jack Ma's family's acquisition of a £19.5 million London mansion amid a rapprochement with Chinese authorities after years of scrutiny and political exile. “Wealthy families are hedging against regime risk—one never knows when policies may turn hostile again. Affluent families are diversifying quietly. Rule of law societies still hold considerable appeal.” In connection with this move by the Ma family, we just read in the FT how an increasing number of wealthy Chinese individuals are attempting to establish family offices and secure residency in Dubai after the increased difficulty of establishing themselves in Singapore. Not much is discussed about why these wealthy families are not staying in the PRC. 1/2

Good to see that our investigation into waste tyres with my top colleague @AtikaRehman and co-reporters @BBCfileon4 was debated in Westminster this week.
This week MPs debated UK waste tyres illegally burned in India following our investigation with @BBCfileon4. "Investigators used GPS tracking devices in several consignments of waste tyres" to expose the trade, says MP @tessamunt, who secured the debate. source-material.org/waste-ty…
