I am finishing out the BEST year for my microschool since starting in April 2022!
Can you give me a virtual high five?
My mission remains: teach kids to read and write.
That's it.
30 years ago, John Stossel asked why San Diego schools weren’t using Direct Instruction to address students’ struggles in reading and math.
The superintendent’s response? Classrooms should be “more than just worksheets and multiplication facts.”
When Stossel pointed out that kids weren’t mastering basic skills, she cited rising graduation rates.
His retort: “You’re graduating them, but they can’t read.”
Fast forward to today, the reflex remains the same: When students aren't academically proficient, deflect to gameable metrics.

Many microschools run shorter days or 4-day weeks.
Great for deep focus and family flexibility. Tough for two working parents with 9-to-5 jobs.
Are microschool start and stop times helping or hurting mass adoption?
50%Helping (more flexible)
50%Hurting (working parents)
0%Need 8-5 wraparound care

I attended a business/education forum recently where a community college president and the superintendent of a local school district discussed current issues (good and bad) in public education.
Illiteracy was not mentioned once.
Only 40.3% of OR 3rd graders are proficient.

So many people, even those running for office, have no idea about the literacy crisis, or that we already know how to teach virtually every child to read. I can't think of a more important issue.

One of the greatest inequalities in American education is that students in affluent, largely white schools have peace and order and students in poor, minority schools have chaos and disruptions, compromising their learning, because activists decided that discipline is “racist”

Every single day I use structured literacy techniques to teach students to read and write.
No fancy computers.
No expensive curriculum.
No apps.
Pencil, paper, flash cards, decodable books, and knowledge.
All in a 2nd living room in my home.
In April '27, it will be 5 yrs.

Missouri is the Show Me State!
Rolla, Mo. kindergartners reading at or above grade level:
Fall 2024: 68%
Spring 2025: 97%
What changed? Reading coaches working monthly with teachers on phonics, fluency and comprehension, across 5 small rural districts.
Small schools. Big leap. the74million.org/article/rur…

The ‘Good.’ whisper after you refused to move might be the most wholesome thing I’ve read all week. That kid claimed you the second he showed you the dinosaurs.

Principal: I noticed you were a few minutes late today.
Me: Actually, there’s a secret school clock that says otherwise…
This is incredibly sad.
Arkansas: 96 registered microschools last August. 142 for this school year.
Same accounts. More small rooms.

Unpopular opinion:
Parents should have the final say in how their child is educated.
Best wishes on this new journey.
It is a bittersweet day.
The Sweet: I am joining @StandTogether working with @AdamPeshek on school choice and microschools across the country.
The bitter: That means I'm leaving @Libertas.
I've had so many amazing moments with Libertas. It is where I got my first taste of policy work. I've appreciated the chance @cboyack and Libertas gave me back in 2022.
But with that said, I am looking forward to the opportunity to impact school choice and microschools nationally with Stand Together.
I'll still be here talking about what is education.

Over the weekend I participated in a home school/alternative education fair. There were over 40 vendors, and the turnout was amazing!
Parents are ready!
And check out the cute bookmark my daughter drew for me...exactly as I envisioned.
