Thought I was getting sick then I realized I was going into withdrawal on account of not having consumed half a gram of caffeine
Gambling is another low-high class horseshoe activity
Both the low and high class have an almost naive view of providence
It’s the middle class that clutches its pearls and tries to protect men from trying their luck
Having said that it’s a nasty industry.
Gambling is an ancient Indo-European tradition attested among many Bronze Age cultures from the Greeks to the Aryans.
It requires a bold and daring acceptance of fate, which is admirable. Of course, gambling addicts are pathetic and those who profit from the misery of others are hardly exemplary. I am sure many bookies are evil. But any decent society must allow gentlemen to enjoy risk, regardless of the consequences.
Partially accurate paraphrase. In Human, All Too Human §267 Nietzsche notes that the Greeks and French—producers of the greatest stylists—learned no foreign languages. Learning many fills memory with words rather than facts and thoughts, and damages the finer sense of one’s mother tongue. He calls it a necessary evil in a cosmopolitan age and predicts a future common language.
Modern Anglos need to understand French, German, latin, and Greek to really understand English
Greek was a much purer language, and as such, it could be trusted as a tool for communication in a way that English or French cannot
Greek etymology was nearly self-contingent
The Greeks were monolingual.
I can't help but think this played a part in their intellectual achievements.
I've wasted countless hours learning foreign languages. I enjoy it, but I admit it is an inferior intellectual pursuit compared to math or philosophy
I'm going to squat here and just say:
"I acknowledge that I live on the ancestral, sacred and unceded territories of the Goth, Etruscan and Celtic peoples."
Aristotle on anger:
"To look quietly on while one’s friends are being insulted shows a slavish nature."
