Worlds apart, but now closer than ever 🇦🇺🇪🇺 Australia and Europe are taking our relationship to the next level with a once in a generation Free Trade Agreement and Security and Defence Partnership. More jobs. More security. More local products in global markets. And in an increasingly uncertain world, these relationships matter. Because when we work together, we’re stronger than ever.

On this Day of Reflection, we extend our deepest condolences following the antisemitic terrorist attack on our Jewish community. An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian and our way of life. There is no place for antisemitism in Australia, or anywhere.

Australia stands firm against human trafficking and modern slavery. This year’s theme - “Human trafficking is Organised Crime – End the Exploitation” - underscores the urgency of global action. The Australian Government has zero tolerance for any form of exploitation and is taking strong action to address modern slavery, including human trafficking and forced labour, both at home and around the world. 🇦🇺As the founder and permanent Chair of the Australia Group — celebrating its 40th anniversary — Australia underscores the Group’s vital role in supporting the effective implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention through the @OPCW which is based in The Hague. Through harmonised national export controls and practical cooperation, the Australia Group helps prevent the proliferation of sensitive and dual-use items. Australia remains firmly committed to a world free of chemical weapons. This is not just a goal — it’s a shared responsibility.
For 40 years, the Australia Group has quietly helped prevent the spread of dangerous chemical and biological weapons. Led by Australia, this international partnership stands as a vital force in global security. Ambassador Vanessa Wood reflects on its legacy - and our leadership.

Today marks eleven years since the tragic downing of Malaysia Airlines Pictures Flight MH17 and the loss of loss of 298 lives, including 38 people who called Australia home. Ambassador French, together with Ukrainian Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands Andriy Kostin, visited the National Monument MH17 in the Netherlands to lay flowers to honour the memory of the victims and to stand in solidarity with their families, loved ones, and all those affected by this horrific act. Recent rulings by the International Civil Aviation Organization and the European Court of Human Rights, both holding Russia responsible, mark historic milestones in the pursuit of truth, justice, and accountability. Australia remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring Russia is held accountable. Since 2014, Australia and the Netherlands have stood side by side in remembrance of those lost. Our partnership has remained strong, grounded in a shared commitment to justice for the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this tragedy. As we mark this solemn anniversary, we honour the memory of those lost and hold their families, loved ones, and next of kin in our thoughts. #MH17 #Justice

Last week, Australia participated in the 109th session of the @OPCW Executive Council. We highlighted our steadfast commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention. Australia worked with key partners, including 🇨🇦 & 🇳🇿 to deliver statements on Syria, Ukraine and multilateral export controls, as well as 🇲🇽, 🇮🇩, 🇰🇷 & 🇹🇷 to deliver a statement on peacebuilding. Australia consistently and strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons by anyone, anywhere, under any circumstances.    Read Australia’s national statement here: opcw.org/sites/default/files…

Deputy Prime Minister of Australia and Minister for Defence, the Hon. Richard Marles MP, visited the MH17 aircraft reconstruction site to pay respects to the victims and their loved ones during his visit to the Netherlands. ICAO's recent ruling holding Russia responsible was a historic step toward justice. Australia remains committed to accountability. Russia must face the truth and make reparations under international law. #MH17 #Justice © Commonwealth of Australia 2025 - Department of Defence / Jay Cronan

In 2025, Australia marks 50 years of NAIDOC Week, a national celebration of First Nations peoples, cultures and achievements. This year’s theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision, Legacy,” honours the generations who came before and the young leaders who carry that legacy forward. Across art, diplomacy, education and community, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples continue to shape a more just and inclusive future.
