ADHD can make you look like a bad friend when you're not one.
When someone is out of sight, they can slip out of my mind, even if I care about them.
Then time passes, the guilt builds and reaching out feels awkward.
So I stay quiet even longer.
It has nothing to do with how much I care for the people in my life.
Autistic Masking isn’t a moral failure and unmasking isn’t automatically the right move in every moment.
They’re strategies.
The question is whether a strategy helps you meet your needs sustainably - or leaves you depleted.

Unmasking for autistics isn’t a luxury.
It’s a necessity for our mental and emotional well-being as autistic humans.
But the reality is, unmasking isn’t always safe in the spaces we occupy.
It’s exhausting to constantly hide parts of ourselves to fit in with societal norms.
What’s helped you feel safe enough to unmask, even just a little? How can we work to create more spaces where autistic humans can exist without the pressure to perform neuronormativity?

When an autistic person says something, don’t read between the lines in the most neuronormative way possible.
And if you do, ask for clarification without an assumption.
And if you’re asked for that clarification, give grace.
