Something a middle-schooler emailed us about: “A ‘combination lock’ should *technically* be called a ‘permutation lock,’ because the order of the numbers matters in permutations, but in combinations the order doesn’t matter.” 10/10, no notes.

By June 1898, Spain had held Guam for four centuries, but the island was so neglected that the local authorities hadn’t received news for months. They didn't even know the Spanish-American War had begun. The USS Charleston slides into the harbor, expecting resistance. Nada. So they fired a few warning shots at an old fort, which the Spanish interpreted as a friendly salute. Local officials rowed out in a boat and apologized that they were out of gunpowder so they couldn’t return the "salute." The Americans said, "Uh, yeah ... we’re at war so you’re our prisoners.” The Spanish officials were stunned. After some awkward back-and-forth, the Spanish governor surrendered, along with ~50 poorly equipped soldiers. No one got hurt. Completely bloodless. US sailors raised the flag and found a single American citizen on the island. A merchant whose previous job was as an elevator operator in San Francisco. The ship's captain said, "you're in charge now," and sailed off to the Philippines. It took about six months for the Americans to return.

Naval engineers who inspected the photograph of the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole in October 2000 said that almost any warship built in the twentieth century would have broken her keel and sunk within an hour after taking a hit like that. A suicide boat packed with hundreds of pounds of military C-4 explosives had detonated directly against the port side of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer DDG-67 in Aden Harbor, Yemen. The blast tore a jagged crater forty feet high and sixty feet wide straight through two-inch steel hull plating right at the waterline. Seawater roared into the main engine rooms, snuffing out the ship's electrical generators, severing the main firefighting pipes, and killing seventeen American sailors in an instant while wounding thirty-nine others. In seconds, the eight-thousand-ton destroyer listed to port, trapped in a foreign harbor with no lights, no air conditioning, and no power. Below deck, the temperature inside the pitch-black, fuel-soaked compartments climbed past one hundred and fifteen degrees Fahrenheit. Why did the USS Cole not sink to the bottom of the harbor that afternoon? First, because American naval architects designed the Arleigh Burke class out of all-steel construction enhanced with seventy tons of Kevlar armor liners and angled bulkheads built from the hard lessons of the Cold War. Second, and even more important, because her surviving crew of nineteen- and twenty-year-old American men and women refused to let her go under. Wearing headlamps in the suffocating dark, young sailors waded chest-deep into black water mixed with toxic jet fuel and sewage to rescue their trapped shipmates with hydraulic jaws and bare hands. When rising water threatened to buckle the remaining steel bulkheads and flood the rest of the ship, damage-control teams sawed heavy wooden four-by-four timbers by hand and wedged them against the groaning steel walls to hold back the ocean. For ninety-six sleepless hours, sailors formed bucket brigades of fuel cans down scorching ladders to keep portable gasoline dewatering pumps running day and night. They kept their crippled destroyer afloat until the heavy-lift ship Blue Marlin carried her home to Mississippi, where American shipbuilders rebuilt her hull and returned USS Cole to the fleet stronger than ever.

Today, she was towed away from Newport News to begin dismantling work in Mobile, AL. Farewell Big E.
When I first started my career, they told me not to live near the shipyard because it was sketchy. But apartments were cheap, and I couldn’t get over the fact that I would have a practically private “beach” right next to the ghost of America’s first nuclear aircraft carrier.

About 340-375M birds are predicted to migrate across the U.S. each night this weekend! Lights at night can be very disorienting to birds during their long fall migration. To help prevent deadly bird collisions, turn off or dim unnecessary lights! Graphic: CornellLab, BirdCast

The South is the true inheritor of Western Civilization. The keeper of the light. The markers of its extant boundaries are Nashville (the Parthenon, Athens of the South) in the North with play into Virginia towards Monticello; the Atlantic Ocean (Sea of Atlas) to the East marked by Charleston, SC; New Orleans to the South (need a ancient marker of some sort); and Dallas, TX to the West signified by the Dallas Pegasus.
