Britain has scrapped its national digital ID scheme.
This is the right decision. A centralised database of every resident's identity is a breach waiting to happen.

and I think this is one of the easiest ways to understand what @aztecnetwork has actually been building all these years.
2021 version:
75,000+ wallets and $100m+ in volume, then it got shut down while Aztec rebuilt the network underneath.
the idea is simple:
→ grab a public tag like yourname.zk.money
→ deposit stables
→ send or request by name or link
→ balance, amount, history and counterparties stay private inside Aztec
the tags are powered by @ensdomains, so instead of sending someone a random 0x... address, you can simply give them your name.
your identity can be public without your entire financial life becoming public with it.
a normal crypto address is a window:
holdings, inflow, payments, and everything that wallet does next.
we just got used to that because most public chains work that way.
a few limits matter:
→ deposits in and withdrawals back to @ethereum are still public
→ transfers are capped below $2,500 per tx
→ the network is still in Alpha
@zk_money already brings one of Zcash’s core use cases: private payments.
but on Aztec, payments are only one application of a programmable privacy network.

Something I think folks don’t fully grok yet is that zk.money is the real deal.
Actually private digital money, with defi capabilities on a permission-less network.
That thing people used to care about in another timeline.
Now it’s real. We’re making it real.
I am hyped to work at Aztec because I believe we are the only project that has a shot at fulfilling the original vision of crypto of expanding freedom in the world:
1. Bitcoin failed to do so because it's a volatile crypto asset unusable for payments. Pure SoV without payments is destined to deteriorate into just another asset to gamble on, not something that helps normal people.
2. Ethereum with stablecoins failed to do so because the UX without privacy is just impossible for normal people.
With Aztec and @zk_money we can:
1. Get perfect UX as you no longer need to think about what address to use to not dox yourself,
2. achieve user friendly and secure self-custody as we have account abstraction that makes implementation of schemes like passkeys-secured account contracts straightforward,
3. as an L2 we have an easy access to all the Ethereum's DeFi so we can easily support whichever unit of account and medium of account token users will desire.
All the other projects rely on an operator and there the forces of surveillance capitalism come into play. Not good.

Too much of crypto relies on pseudonymity instead of privacy, especially in the age of AI as it becomes easier to track and correlate transactions onchain.
