A confidential 1870 British memo on Egyptian arrival in Berbera is extremely relevant to Somaliland’s current relationship with Egypt
When the Egyptians arrived in Berbera they found a crescent flag flying over the fort in Berbera which they took as a sign of acceptance to foreign rule, whereas the local residents raised it as a standard of Islam for all Muslim’s rather than any indication of submission
The Egyptians have been meddling in our business for centuries and have never been able to lay any claim to sovereignty over our borders we are an independent people who have never submitted to the rule of any power
Today the Egyptians who have been welcomed as brothers in Islam to Somaliland are once again using our collective faith to try and subvert our independence 154 years later

This guy, @HoehneVirgil, has stooped to the lowest depths by hurling unimaginably offensive insults at an 80-year-old Somali woman. The racial undertone of the word he used, "Wasakh," meaning "dirty," carries deep racial connotations rooted in historical racism and discrimination. Referring to a black woman as "dirty" perpetuates harmful stereotypes and reinforces a dehumanizing history of prejudice against black women, where white men systematically degraded them.
His audacity to use such racist and misogynistic language is absolutely reprehensible and violates all standards of decency. It's particularly egregious for someone claiming to be an "academic" to engage in such behavior, especially without understanding Somali culture. This conduct flagrantly disregards the ethical principles expected of academics. We cannot allow this to go unaddressed, @HoehneVirgil; your blatant racism and disrespect towards Somali women will not be tolerated. This behavior exemplifies typical orientalist attitudes, where native cultures are demeaned by those who perceive themselves as superior.
It's disgusting to witness individuals who claim to be Somali defending such despicable behavior. Just yesterday, I defended Billan Osman against another racist attack from racist white guy, and now this guy believes he can do the same and insult someone as revered as Edna.

Borama Civil Society and Political Representatives Call for Peace, Justice, and Protection of Innocent Civilians
No innocent civilian should suffer for a conflict they neither started nor participated in. Conflicts between communities or across borders must never justify ethnic hostility, collective punishment, or violence against innocent people, whether in Borama or anywhere else. Our Oromo brothers and sisters living among us deserve safety, dignity, and equal protection under the law, regardless of ethnicity or background.
This is especially important in Borama and the wider region, where Somaliland’s Somali and Oromo communities have long shared deep-rooted ties through trade, movement, neighbourly relations, and peaceful coexistence. These historic bonds of mutual respect, trust, and brotherhood must not be weakened by conflict, division, or hostility. The longstanding relationship between these communities is a valuable foundation for regional peace and stability.
We call on all relevant authorities, community leaders, and stakeholders to protect civilians, uphold human dignity, promote justice, and strengthen dialogue and reconciliation. Preserving peaceful relations and preventing violence are shared responsibilities that demand wisdom, restraint, and decisive action.
No conflict should divide neighbours. No difference should justify violence. Protecting innocent lives and preserving generations of peaceful coexistence must remain our common commitment.
