“Black” emerged as a self-identifying term and was chosen in part for its simplicity and pride. Words like Negro and Colored had been used. The term’s adoption was tied to community-building and group solidarity not a skin color.
Historians note that “Black” was first used by people who had been called Negros/Colored themselves in the USA -as a collective term of people that reflected shared heritage and dignity- centuries before "continental Africans" adopted it, during the 19th century

"Mamie Smith" opened the recording industry to Black American music. In the summer of 1920, Mamie Smith’s hit record Crazy Blues broke a barrier in the music industry. Her success proved there was a real market for Black American performers- created the era of race records.
The only people specifically fighting to end slavery were the formerly enslaved Black troops who joined the a Union Army in 63. White troops said they were only fighting to keep the Union together. Thats why the Union had to deal with deserters after the Emancipation Proclamation
