Looking forward to everything @OperaAustralia, @VictorianOpera, @MelbourneOpera, @BK_Opera, @A_C_O, @LyricOperaMelb and @IOperaAus. Sometimes it seems like there’s never enough but the city sure has a broad variety of options.

Certainly looks eerie enough on this wet and dark evening for @BK_Opera’s The Lighthouse, in a Melbourne premiere of composer and librettist Peter Maxwell Davies 1979 chamber opera.

Sung with passion and delivered on a shoestring, @BK_Opera’s La Boheme is a little ragged but it’s a stark reminder that operatic storytelling exists on so many scales. Not an ounce of snobbery to be seen here. Oh, and Belinda Dalton is a superbly cast Mimi well worth the ticket.

Back in Melbourne with more Puccini coming up tomorrow night courtesy of @BK_Opera with La bohème, presented in the city’s hyper-hip north at Northcote’s Wesley Anne, a venue I’m eager to see too. bkopera.com.au/boheme-2019

This might very well be what constitutes my opera plans for the rest the year. There’s broad scale appeal to dive into with @SFOpera, @VictorianOpera, @GertrudeOpera’s Yarra Valley Opera Festival, @LAOpera, @BK_Opera, @OperaAustralia and @pinchgut.

Two music stands, a background screen and two strong performances from Michael Lampard and Zara Barrett. That, and Kym Dillon’s electronically manipulated and reimagined score brought a flood of mystery, chills and tension in Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle for @BK_Opera. Nice work!
