If, like FitzSimons, you are an Anglo-Celtic Australian who supports mass immigration, you support a policy that will make your descendants a minority in the country your ancestors built.
Your ancestors would probably despise you for that.

Left wing commentator Peter FitzSimons just published an interview with George Megalogenis where they both gloat that mass migration will soon make white Australians a minority in Australia.

A falling birth rate strengthens the case for higher levels of immigration only if you think any purported benefits justify making the descendants of existing Australians a smaller majority or even a minority in their own homeland.
If you do think that, be clear about that.

1. About 40% of resident adults are foreign-born. Some of them will be doctors & nurses.

In this week’s instalment of my @Aus_Bloodlines we have a very well-documented ancestor.
Soldier. Pioneer. And often in trouble with the law.
I should note that my wife’s ancestors seem to be noticeably more “colourful” than mine.
The phrase “Heritage Americans” does indeed imply “hereditary rights”.
So what? Any inheritance is a hereditary right. Including our homeland.
Those who reject hereditary rights live only for the moment, with no gratitude for their ancestors & no care for their descendants.
Last I checked, pretty much everyone who came to America came here to escape hereditary rights of nobility.
"Heritage American" = hereditary rights of nobility.
The idea of "Heritage Americans" being somehow better than more recent Americans is perhaps the most un-American concept imaginable.
Here in America, we are all judged by what we do or do not do as individuals, without regard for who our ancestors were.
THAT is what makes us Americans.
So much of the immigration discourse is compromised by blatant economic ignorance.

True conservatives oppose mass immigration even if migrants vote for low taxes, work hard, obey the law & help little old ladies cross the street.

Cato-type libertarians are not only among the worst people on the planet. They are also dumb.
They claim that an atomised & deracinated society promotes freedom & prosperity.
What it actually does is pave the way for the state to get bigger & more powerful, year after year.
America is not an idea. But the United States was founded on ideas & as an act of rebellion against America’s British heritage.
That paved the way for the United States to become a propositional/creedal nation, rather than a nation defined by its heritage.
Every few months or so on this platform there are debates on questions like:
“Who is English?”
“Who is Australian?”
“Who is American?”
One debate I never see is:
“Who is Japanese?”
National identity is only a controversial issue for liberal nations with mass immigration.
Once large numbers of foreigners are allowed into your country, eventually many of them will believe that your country belongs to them too.
And many of your compatriots will agree with them.
And they will get a piece of paper saying that.

Social cohesion, community & identity require that the vast majority of foreigners we admit into our country should be here strictly on a temporary basis.
Large-scale permanent settlement is disruptive, divisive & transformative.

Think about what that really says about the system for a moment, its not at all what Burke thinks.

In the 1840s, pastoralists struggled to recruit free settlers as shepherds.
They asked colonial authorities to import indentured labour from India.
The answer was no.
So the pastoralists innovated. They started using wire fences to keep the sheep where they needed to be.
In the 1840s, there was a push from Australian farmers to import cheap Indian workers to act as shepherds.
Reading the testimony of these pastoralists is striking.
They were aggrieved about the unreliability and high expectations of British settlers in a tight labour market. They provided explicit details about just how much cheaper – and tractable – Indian workers were compared with both free settlers and convicts. And they warned of dire economic consequences if their request was declined.
Colonial authorities listened – and said no.
Authorities Wanted an Egalitarian and Cohesive Australia.
This decision was based on a clear understanding of the economic and social impact of cheap foreign labour. It also reflected officials’ insistence that the narrow interests of employers should not trump broader goals.
So, what happened to fix the shepherd shortage?

Australian universities are a national embarrassment & a disgrace.
The sector is like a vine that has grown too large & produces poor quality grapes.
It needs to be pruned aggressively if it is ever to be healthy & productive again.
When opposition to mass immigration builds, politicians pivot to “skilled migration”.
If we need more skills, how about we fix our education & training policy?
And immigration itself adds to that “need”. Every time we import another 10,000 eyeballs, we need another optometrist.
1,100 people a day. That’s one new arrival in Australia every 78 seconds.
That’s the scale of mass migration Australians are dealing with under Labor.
And today, instead of cutting immigration, Labor announced more tinkering around the edges.
Australians are struggling to find a home, pay the rent and keep up with the cost of living.
Labor’s answer is to keep the numbers high and hope no one notices.
Australians deserve lower numbers and higher standards.
So why didn’t Labor cut immigration today?
