A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped inside a moving bus in Delhi after she boarded the bus seeking help. According to reports, the accused driver and conductor allegedly assaulted her and later left her near Kashmere Gate. Both accused have been arrested. But is arrest enough? No. Arresting the accused after such a horrific crime is the beginning of justice, not the end of it. The real question is: Why did they have the courage to commit such a crime in the first place? If criminals are not genuinely afraid of the law, strict punishment and the consequences of their actions, then simply arresting them after the crime will not solve the problem. Government must answer: Why are women and children still unsafe? Why is there not enough fear of the law among criminals? Where is the deterrence? How long will families continue to worry about the safety of their daughters? We don't need another statement, another committee or another promise. We need a justice system where criminals know that if they commit such a crime, they will face swift, certain and severe punishment. Arrest is not justice. Real justice is when the law creates enough fear to prevent the next crime. The government must answer—not with speeches, but with action. #Presidentof india
