The Namibia Sustainable Finance Alliance (NSFA), in collaboration with the Bank of Namibia and RMB Namibia, held a workshop under the theme, “Sustainable Finance in Practice: Strategies, Risks and Opportunities for Financial Institutions”. The session explored how institutions can protect lending and investment portfolios from climate risks while financing adaptation and sustainable business opportunities.
Mekondjo Erastus of Monasa Advisory & Associates presented on moving from ESG strategy to investment readiness, outlining what capital providers require. Beth Rivett-Carnac of Rand Merchant Bank explained how to develop an ESG and sustainable finance strategy that connects business priorities with appropriate financing. Dr Chantal Naidoo of Rabia Transitions examined climate risks, potential El Niño impacts and responses by financial institutions, while Colin Lindeque of Carbon Capital highlighted carbon market opportunities in Namibia, including biochar and rangeland restoration. A closing discussion connected these topics to institutions’ financing decisions.
The participants included professionals from banking, investment management, development finance, regulation, sustainability, renewable energy, accounting, research, risk management and compliance, alongside business leaders and media representatives. The Bank of Namibia and the Deutsche Bundesbank (@bundesbank) have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Technical Central Bank Cooperation, reaffirming a partnership that dates back to 2011. The agreement was signed by the Governor of the Bank of Namibia, Mr Ebson Uanguta, and Deutsche Bundesbank Executive Board Member, Mr Lutz Lienenkämper, during his official visit to Namibia recently.
The renewed agreement will strengthen cooperation through technical assistance, specialised training, knowledge exchange and institutional capacity-building across key areas of central banking, including financial stability, macroprudential oversight, sustainability and reserves management. A notable outcome of the longstanding partnership is the admission of five Namibian students to the Deutsche Bundesbank University of Applied Sciences in Hachenburg, Germany, where they are receiving specialised academic and practical training in central banking.
The renewal underscores the Bank's commitment to investing in human capital, leveraging international expertise and advancing its vision of becoming a knowledge-based central bank in support of a sound, resilient and stable financial system.
