One of the stats of the meet for me: Tyler Ray (1:48.24) swam under the American Record (1:48.66) in the 200m fly, becoming the 4th fastest man ever in the event. Unfortunately, two of the other three were ahead of him in that heat, so he didn't even make the team!
It seems like the U.S. is pretty good at this whole “meters” thing…

Today I got a notification that I'm now able to set a unique username for my profile. It's encouraging to see StackOverflow really focusing on the important problems.
New record for Stack Overflow: <1000 questions posted last month

Following up this post with another nice example of push-vs-pull based customization. One problem really just don't work if you try a pull-based approach: generating operator functions. brevzin.github.io/c++/2026/1…
C++26, with reflection and annotations, gives us some great tools to solve problems. But we're not... quite done yet. This post goes through an interesting problem I ran into recently and what a solution to it might look like. brevzin.github.io/c++/2026/0…

We're an hour out of day two of the CSL, but @UVASwimDive is already winning this meet.

I've been coming to this pool for meets for years. I've never heard it anywhere this loud before. 101 dB apparently. ... so far. It's still early in the meet.
Roar of the crowd is shaking the cameras lolol. I love it. That's the energy swimming NEEDS!

Things I did not expect to happen in 2026: drama over claiming credit over solving Navier-Stokes. What an incredible time to be alive, eh @KenOno691? The fact that math is constantly in the news is certainly making me wish I was better at math, so I could appreciate this more.

I did a 50y free with no breath today at the end of practice. Really felt like I accomplished something.

Just imagine what would happen if @SwimmerMichael drops a 58.1 100 breast again. I don't think we could handle the collective head explosions amongst the commentariat. 🙏
Sports are a roller coaster. 6 months ago, the entire narrative was about Dressel being on the long coast to retirement. But one monster meet this week, and everyone is SO HYPED. Like...everyone was just waiting for permission to get back on the bandwagon. I love it.

People complain a lot about how inconsistent C++ can be. But C++ doesn't have anything on the VAR rules.

Today had my first @SwimNerds clock experience (Carmody Rec Center in Lakewood, CO). 10/10 clock, would happily struggle to make any kind of interval at all again.

This year at CppNow, I got invited to give a keynote about Reflection. Instead of talking about all the cool things we can do today, I took the opportunity to talk about all the cool things I want us to be able to do tomorrow. That talk just got posted: youtu.be/DZTkT1Cq_aY?is=zlcC…

You know, when I wrote this piece pointing out Sarah Sjöström's soon-to-be 9 year span of holding three individual world records, I did not expect to her to lose two of them this year. I certainly did not expect that even *before* PanPacs/Euros. swimswam.com/history-on-the-…
MARRIT STEENBERGEN!! The prophecy fulfilled, a new World Record in the women's 100 meter free, 51.68, in Rome. This was always her destiny. It was derailed by injury and other things in her late teens and early 20s, but the potential was always there.

It's not very often that you can fix existing issues and add functionality while ALSO simplifying the wording, but we did that in Brno. These kinds of language changes don't really get the headlines — it's not like it's a new feature. But it does mean more stuff just works.

This is changing the constant evaluation model to be based on consteval-only values instead of consteval-only types (isocpp.org/files/papers/P410…).

The reigning Olympic Champion in the 200 breast is now the World Record holder in the 50 free. We live in a world where many elite 200 breaststrokers aren't even medal contenders in the 100 breast. Meanwhile KD now has two freestyle WRs (the other being the 100 scm free).
During the third day of the final stop of the 2026 Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis, Kate Douglass posted a stunning 23.59 in the women's 50 freestyle to break Sarah Sjöström's world record. The previous record of 23.61 had stood since the 2023 World Championships.

It just occurred to me that the meeting in Brno next week will be just about a full 10 years after my first WG21 meeting... which was the Oulu meeting in June 2016. Been quite a decade.
