This was my first podcast. Tim was a great host and this was such a fun conversation!

Feminism is for Everybody is a top recommendation when people ask me for an orientation to the topic. And where we stand: class matters was a profound influence on my thinking. Rest in power, bell hooks.
This week, I received an email from a client asking me to ensure my talk is in compliance with the recent Executive Order banning anti-racism workshops, which included not using the term "white privilege" during the session. I said no and offered to cancel the agreement. Thread

This was often the case in academia too. Talking about family implied that you weren't adequately focused on your work. Maybe it's a side-effect of professions that expect passionate dedication from practitioners.
Saw someone tweet about how little developers seem to talk about their kids on this platform. I can’t stop thinking about it. That is a clear example of problematic practices in this industry. People have lives and families outside of code. As they should.
As a newer developer, my insecurities are less "I can't get this" than they are "I can't get this fast enough" (to meet others expectations).

Hi White People! I want to tell you something. It's the second week since the explosion of this round of protests. The second week since George Floyd's snuff film started being broadcast all over. I want to tell you something about my experience with white progressive backlash.

While some companies think it’s enough to tweet support for social justice while marketing a tool for oppression, IBM gets out of the facial recognition business & states opposition to mass surveillance & racial profiling. theverge.com/2020/6/8/212846…

Some phrases I use to remind myself that almost everything we say is based on our perspectives, which is defined by our lived experiences: 🔹 From my experience 🔹 ... for me 🔹 I wonder if 🔹 I’m curious about

Several of these examples are what come to mind every time I hear a politician or newscaster say "outside agitator" or some synonym. Know thy history. This rhetoric has long been used to delegitimize protest and activism for racial justice.
THREAD: As police and politicians insist that this wave of uprisings is the sole work of "outside agitators" to justify violent crackdowns, now's the time to revisit the long, racist history of the term and its role of fracturing solidarity in the name of counter-insurgency.

Respect. I admire people who act on their convictions.
Friday was my last day at Amazon: tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/… [Server’s running a little hot but give it time, it’ll come through.]
I code like death. Though the outcome is assured, the timeline is uncertain and the process is sometimes painful

I need to go to this
Next academic conference I host (ha!) will have not just a poster session but an imposter session, where people can present on topics they don't really know anything about. It may get its own day.

“...if we don't open, the shop down the street will, and then we lose that business.” Premature reopening is creating now-or-never market pressures. When people feel forced to take existential risks, they’re experiencing coercion, not expressing liberty. cnn.com/2020/04/27/us/corona…

Love this. I found this same sort of strategy was key to fights over right to work: We're not against unions, we just know better how they ought to operate.
