🧵 ‘China’s Wars’ (2026) by @VGokhale59, India’s former Foreign Secretary (2018-20) and former ambassador to China (2016-17), has excellent coverage of China and its wars / crises of 1958, 1962, 1969 and 1979 but the real value is in his concluding lessons for India. (1/23)

Sort of a shout into the void, but as rallies get canceled and CENTCOM chiefs prowl around DC, it needs to be said: Using Vance's overtures as cover for another round of strikes would burn one of the last diplomatic face cards we have in the hand. It'd be very shortsighted.

RIP Patrick Stewart. A tremendous Lenin in Fall of Eagles. Even looked a bit like Lenin. Also Sejanus. Basically top notch at ruthless bastards from European history

Patrick Stewart playing Sejanus in the 1976 BBC production of ‘I, Claudius’. ⚔️
This take gives the prequels far too much credit. But it’s clear that General Grievous is a classic opera buffa villain complete with a cape and campy winks at the audience (“time to abandon ship!”). If he had eyebrows they’d be arched all the time.

Attracting talented people from India has been a huge American advantage. Turning them into targets of racial resentment is a sure way to squander it. A serious agenda for American competitiveness should recognize that.

Had forgotten about Hugh Trevor-Roper's Ten Commandments for English style. From the 2nd Commandment flows all.

Fun fact; there's a pretty serious argument this hat, the pakol, has origins in the Macedonian Kausia, worn by the soldiers of Alexander and the Kings of Bactria. It's extremely similar.

Good analysis of the challenges Pakistan faces if it were to get involved in Yemen. One that is not mentioned is that Pakistan is also in a quasi war with the Taliban Afghanistan. Would Iran exploit that vulnerability? If Pakistan open a front with Houthis, would Iran throw its support behind the Taliban? Comments by an Iranian parliamentarian in Kabul last week caused quite a bit of worry in Islamabad.

In my debut with DARC, I argue America should view gamers as a strategic well of untapped know-how and purposefully tailor high-tech weapons for the way gamers learn.
We're thrilled to kick off our series on video games and warfare today with this piece from @VestutiMarco arguing that @DeptofWar should adopt a new paradigm of "playable weapons": leaning into gaming interfaces as a way of accelerating soldier effectiveness with new systems.
