"The problem is Donald Trump. And the way forward for Republicans must begin by putting Trump behind them and asking themselves what they have to offer the country in his wake ... The party’s next phase can’t come soon enough."

Let's be clear about what happened on Tuesday: the election results were not a rebuke of conservatism; they were a rebuke of one man's failed policies and malignant incompetence and of those who wholly abandoned their constitutional obligation to serve as guardrails against him. It wasn't a choice between right and left; it was a choice between right and wrong. #PrinciplesFirst

For traditional conservatives, burning the MAGA GOP to the ground was the best possible result. Sure, Trump beat two flawed Democrats, but he's been a a disaster for free markets, rule of law, civility, and Reaganite foreign policy. May the GOP rediscover principled conservatism.

Gotta start by acknowledging that Trump was and is the problem. Quietly whispering it won’t do it. We need to pick up the pieces of the conservative movement, and fight for a renewed Republican Party with principles that stands for something besides Trump. He has destroyed the party and he lost this election (helped by the 95% of obedient R’s).

Bad policy, bad character make bad politics: erratic tariffs, impulsive Iran war, blanket pardons, apparent corruption, weaponized justice, ICE brutality, mountainous deficits, hiding Epstein, abandoning allies and coddling enemies. Hoping for a course correction, for the country and for my party.

It’s the war.
It’s the blatant corruption.
It’s the trade wars.
It’s the sucking up to Putin.
It’s ICE’s cruelty.
It’s the administration’s incompetence.
It’s the Epstein files.
It’s Trump’s disgraceful behavior in office.
It’s a Republican-controlled Congress refusing to hold him accountable.
It’s ALL of it. And so much more
JD Vance, in his first statement following last night’s Republican wipeout:
“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night.
If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that’s at least honest.
But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there.”

First @Substack piece: The voters have delivered their verdict. Republicans now have a responsibility to decide what comes next. We can spend another decade defending what we’ve become, or we can begin the work of building something better.
The answer is neither to continue down this path nor to recreate the Republican Party of twenty years ago. It is to build a conservatism that applies enduring principles to the challenges Americans face today: affordability, housing, education, public safety, and economic opportunity. One that takes fiscal responsibility seriously, respects constitutional limits, and measures success by the lives improved rather than the opponents defeated.

Voters could plainly see how a lack of guardrails on an out-of-control president led to terrible outcomes for the economy, government services, and basic personal freedoms.
Midterms often check the party in power, but this was off the charts. Other presidents have weathered inflation, high gas prices, and foreign conflicts without facing this kind of collapse. This wasn’t a normal midterm rebalancing — it was a total rejection of the authoritarian philosophy that has defined this administration. And it happened up and down the ticket, all across the country. ifyoucankeepit.org/p/the-mid…

My piece in @washsunperspect: Americans gave Republicans control of Washington and an opportunity to deliver. Voters wanted lower costs, stability and leadership focused on their lives. Too often, they got chaos, corruption and excuses. Congressional Republicans could have exercised oversight, challenged the Trump administration’s failures and demonstrated that their loyalty belonged to the people they represent. Too many chose otherwise. Last night is the consequence.

Move over, @realDonaldTrump.
There’s a new leader of the GOP.
His name is Ron DeSantis.
He’s going to clean up the mess you made.
Ben Newman retweeted
Ron DeSantis is laser focused, extremely smart, overwhelmingly competent and the most effective conservative leader in the country, which it turns out might have been useful at a national level

JD Vance’s 2028 presidential chances were effectively crushed after tonight’s landslide loss for Republicans.
Rebuilding the GOP is a job for one man:
Ron DeSantis.
He is the quarterback America needs.

A closing message of @SpeakerJohnson and his GOP was: vote for us and we promise to not do oversight. Both an abdication of Constitutional duty and just terrible politics

Trump didn't lose because he started the Iran War.
He lost because he didn't commit to winning the war, and instead parked it in a confusing stalemate.
• 40 days of fighting
• 210 days of nonsense
Even out of those 40 days, only 25 days saw serious heavy fighting, and yet, they were extremely successful.
The islamic regime was on the edge of collapse, its leaders assassinated left and right, and the IRGC were literally hiding in tunnels and sleeping in tents. It was the time to push for surrender, not pull back.
Going for a ceasefire rather than the killshot back in April was a MASSIVE mistake.
