From classroom to courtroom to crown: That is how Orchivirigh Dr. James Akperan Orshi, OON (1925–1990), the third Tor Tiv, lived a remarkable life. He was the rare leader who fused a teacher’s heart, a lawyer’s mind, and a statesman’s skill with traditional authority. Tor Tiv Orshi was the first Tor Tiv to be installed with a Holy bible instead of Swem, making him the first practising Christian to sit on the Tor Tiv stool. In 1985 he convened the gatherings that gave birth to Mdzough U Tiv—the enduring socio-cultural voice of the Tiv nation. Tor Tiv Osrhi left a significant mark in education during his reign that a Polytechnic has being named after him decades after his demise.
