'Paul Halpern’s The Great Atom Debate is a dual biography that should be of interest even to people who don’t care a whit about physics but love a good story, especially one showcasing two fascinating, driven characters.'

What is colder than outer space itself?
A cloud of gas called the Boomerang Nebula. It blows gas away so fast that it cools below the faint afterglow of the Big Bang that fills the rest of the sky, making it the coldest known natural place.
At the other end, the Large Hadron Collider smashes lead nuclei together to make a droplet of quark-gluon plasma, the kind of matter that filled the universe in its first microseconds. It lives for a tiny fraction of a second.
Lord Kelvin proposed measuring temperature from absolute zero in 1848, which is why this ladder starts at the floor of the scale.

Why does a straw look bent in water, a violin ring in a hall, and a siren change pitch as it passes?
Waves, and the same nine ideas explain all of them. Light, sound and a ripple on a pond obey one rulebook.
The story starts in 1801, when Thomas Young shone light through two narrow slits and saw stripes of light and dark. Only waves can cancel each other like that, and that settled the argument about light for a century. Polarization later told us light waves wiggle sideways, which sound waves in air do not.
Pick any card and you will find it again in music, radio or a camera lens. Which one do you meet every day without noticing?

Eminent German chemist Adolf van Baeyer born #OTD in 1835 first synthesized indigo dye and the pH indicator phenolphthalein in addition to other discoveries. He also lends his name to the Baeyer-Villiger reaction for oxidation of ketones to esters and was awarded the 1905 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his theories on ring strain. The German Chemical Society recognizes outstanding research in organic chemistry with an award in his name.
