Last week Solana shipped the biggest consensus change in its history: Alpenglow.
It targets ~150ms finality, down from ~12.8s (~85x faster).
Here's how it works ๐งต
With this update:
โข PoH is removed from consensus
โข Vote txs (~75% of all Solana txs) disappear, freeing block space
โข Reported TPS will drop. Real activity wonโt.
The other half of Alpenglow: Rotor.
Votor finalizes blocks. Rotor gets them to validators faster, replacing Turbine's multi-hop tree with a single layer of relays (~2 hops).
Not live yet, no date.
If only 60โ80% shows up, a second round runs. 60% again means final.
Both paths run in parallel, so a slow validator set degrades latency instead of halting finality, as long as โฅ60% of stake stays responsive.
New system: Votor. It removes the 32-slot wait.
Votes go off-chain and get aggregated into certificates.
If โฅ80% of stake votes in round 1, the block is final immediately. Confirmed and finalized become one step. That's the fast path.

First, what "finality" means.
A Solana tx goes through 2 stages:
โข Confirmed: ~2/3 of stake voted on its block (~0.5s)
โข Finalized: irreversible, ~32 slots deep (~12.8s)
Alpenglow attacks that 12.8s.
