Sometimes I joke about what I'd do if I had one day left to live. Eat junk, go crazy, etc. Today it hit me: Jesus knew. And he washed feet.

They are to make a sanctuary for me so that I may dwell among them. —Exodus 25:8 See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which is translated “God is with us.” —Matthew 1:23 His desire? To be with us.

On Saturday evenings The Eldest preaches his sermon to me and JB and asks for feedback. Today it was via speaker phone as we were driving. I’m biased, but he’s pretty dang good. Excited for him to preach Philippians 2:1-11 tomorrow.

I’m against the death penalty (and have been for decades) because: 1. No evidence it lowers crime or deters murder. 2. 4% of those executed are innocent. 3. It is cruel and unusual. 4. It is more expensive than a life sentence. 5. I can’t square it with my faith in Jesus.

Addendum: Some seem to think that I'm anti-justice or anti-victim since I'm anti-death penalty. Certainly not the case. Just not convinced that the death penalty provides the justice or closure we think it does, particularly in the cases I've been involved with.

From what I'm gathering in my discussions, Anthropic et al wants the Pope (and others) to declare AI agents conscious so that they can be factored into ethical frameworks/decision making. Meaning: the goal of AI corporations is that AI agents be seen as peers of humans. 1/14
Replying to @Pontifex
NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious. Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm. For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. thelettersfromleo.com/p/nyt-…

But if AI agents are conscious, then corporations can't be blamed for illegal/unethical actions. And if the universe has infinite good, corps can justify agents doing evil. Infinite good still exists. So that's concerning for those of us living in the finite world. 13/14

I'm obviously a theologian/ethicist, not someone working in AI. And perhaps my musings are off base. But I think the Pope (and others) have good reasons to insist that AI agents are not conscious. Interested in hearing your thoughts. 14/14
