A Maratha king's court in Thanjavur kept painted records of diseased eyes, including a corneal ulcer drawn before and after treatment. The king was Serfoji II, a Bhonsle who ruled from 1798 to 1832. He ran a hospital called Dhanvantari Mahal, where Siddha, Ayurveda and Unani medicines were made. In March 2004, a team from Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai went through the eye records in the Sarasvati Mahal Library, Thanjavur. They reported 44 patient case sheets, 6 in Modi script and 38 in English, plus 18 drawings. Patients were between 5 and 60 years old. The English sheets use the words of an eye clinic: lid, conjunctiva, cornea, lens, lens capsule, posterior chamber. One entry is dated 9 September 1827. A 4 year old man had a cataract 6 months old. A needle was passed into his eye and the cloudy lens pressed down below the pupil. Part of the outer layer came loose and stayed in the pupil. The sheet notes much pain, then the treatment given, then the lens slowly absorbing and the man improving. Diagnosis, treatment, a complication and the result are all on 1 record, and some cases have a painted picture of the eye as well. Outcomes were written as "improved" or "same", and patients were paid Rs 2 when they left. The authors think the operation was probably couching. They also say Serfoji is "said" to have been skilled at cataract surgery, but the sheets don't show who held the needle. Sources: J. Biswas, V. Badrinath, S.S. Badrinath, "Ophthalmic contributions of Raja Serfoji II (1798-1832)", Indian Journal of Ophthalmology 60(4):297-300, 2012. Photo 1: A painted pair of eyes with handwritten annotations. The source identifies the condition as leucoma, a white opacity of the cornea. Photo 2: The paper's record counts: 44 patient records, six in Modi script, 38 in English and 18 drawings. The March 2004 library visit is also highlighted. Photo 3: Patient ages, anatomical terminology, recorded vision outcomes of "improved" or "same", and the Rs 2 inam on discharge. Photo 4: The dated case in the post: 9 September 1827, a 45-year-old cataract patient. The highlighted passage describes the procedure and the lens fragment remaining in the pupil. The following lines record pain, treatment and improvement. Image Source: Biswas, Badrinath & Badrinath, Indian Journal of Ophthalmology 60:297-300 (2012), Sarasvati Mahal Library collection. Mobile PLI stats as follows: Government incentive paid: Rs 19,000 Cr. Direct tax collected: Rs 25,000 Cr. GST collected: Rs 3,00,000 Cr. Electronics manufacturing employs 25 Lakh people; mobile manufacturing alone employs 12 Lakh. Cope harder!!

An interesting take on pollution: - how policies are driven by what some of the 'environmentalists' can 'see' - how absence of infra impacts poverty and pollution - why driving income should be the focus of policies By @bbhandarii and @urvashiagwl substack.com/home/post/p-221…

COVID pushed India's farm share up from 42.4% to 44.3%. But look at who went back: men's farm share barely moved (39.4% → 39.1%); women's jumped from 53.5% to 58.7%. Four years on, it has not come back down. Analysis using @latlong_ai Aaloka. Detailed blog 👇

How much has UP’s crime declined under Yogi Adityanath? • 94.5% decline in attempted rape cases • 79.9% decline in dacoity • 72.0% decline in sexual harassment • 68.3% decline in public order offences • 34.2% decline in murder cases • 33.4% decline in rape cases • 27.8% decline in property offences Crime in UP rose over decades, but declined under a decade of Yogi Adityanath. India 40y at 7.9%, tax-free for foreign investors. There is no great hurry: it was available a few months ago and should be so in a few weeks/months too at broadly similar yields. But on a longer term basis, getting almost 8% locked in that too in a deeply undervalued currency with no history of default or hyperinflation is incredible. As the world’s largest polity (and democracy) with nuclear weapons and a very stable economy/polity, this is basically a no-brainer for those who have the requisite patience.

A milestone passed unheralded: there are fewer Indian men working in the farms than in services. In 2025, 36.6% of India's male workers were in services and 33.7% on farms. In 2017-18 it was the reverse. The lines crossed after the pandemic. A block of states from RJ to OD are farm labour dominant. For details, see blog in the reply.

Kids, get your moral compass from parents & grandparents. They're the only ones with skin in your game, truly wanting you to have a good life, in the deepest sense of what 'good' means. Get values from some nitwit Prof or misguided senior in social studies dept, you're toast.
Leftists can’t sustain a revolution on general ground-level issues coz they can’t survive a third day without bringing Muh Kashmir and my broda Umar khalid. And that’s when they lose the support of masses. They were designed to be NOT massy. That’s why they have barely any connection with their families. They are outlaws. Manufacturing rituals like Laal Salaam to form a cult which fills in for the lack of a family.

India's farm share of workers barely moved in seven years: 42.4% (2017-18) to 41.5% (2025). One would conclude the farm exit has stalled. It hasn't. Two opposite flows are cancelling each other out. Men's farm share fell 5.7 points. Women's rose 5.3. Women also grew from ~21% to ~31% of all workers, and most of them went to the farm. 🧵

Women's farm share rose most in the east: Bihar +26.5 pts, Jharkhand +25.0, Assam +23.3, Odisha +16.2. Men migrate; women take over the field.
