My native Alabama often is recognized by its most sinister sons—Wallace, Bull Connor, the 16th St. bombers—or sports figures Bryant & Saban. The fuller story belongs to @repjohnlewis, Rosa Parks, Frank Johnson, Autherine Lucy, Helen Keller, Nelle Harper Lee and so many others.

One addendum — Those Southern seats still mattered for FDR and the New Deal, both in passing sweeping measures but also limiting/shaping some of them in racist ways. See redlining.
I've seen versions of this cope and they all ignore how many seats Dems started with. The "smart take" was that it would be hard for them to crack 230 bc they had so many swing seats already - Rs entered the cycle with just two members in districts won by Kamala. The biggest GOP House majority since the New Deal was the 2014 majority of 247 seats. Dems have already zoomed past that. And their big New Deal era majorities relied on Solid South conservatives who were replaced by Rs long ago. A majority of this size, where the most conservative member is Henry Cuellar (a pro-life Hispanic who's otherwise a normal liberal), is brand new.

For years, my dad battled Parkinson’s disease. On Election Night, I got to tell him, “Pop, we won.” This morning, he passed away. A part of me believes he held on just long enough to see his son make it to Congress. He won’t be there when I’m sworn in. But I know he’ll be standing right beside me. Rest easy, Daddy. I’ll take it from here. These next two years are for you ❤️

Black representation "might not be important to Debbie, but it's certainly important to us." After GOP gerrymandering, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz wants a plurality Black district to choose her. She insists she can deliver for FL-20. My story: apnews.com/article/midterms-…

Georgia's redistricting session begins today. It's especially salient in Georgia, where the Capitol includes a statue of the Rev. MLK Jr. and sits blocks from where he lived, preached and led the movement that yielded the Voting Rights Act of 1965. apnews.com/article/redistric…
