9/10 hours spent chasing grants - that’s what @fundsorter wants to give back to community groups. Small charities lose days hunting for the right fund & rewriting the same story for every form. 42% of charities here are volunteer-led, running on less than $40k a year.

Their mission runs 400 years, because that is how long a Tawhai [beech] takes to reach maturity. Six years ago Michelle and Nigel moved to the end of Boons Valley above Picton intending to run forest bathing retreats, and found 200 hectares that needed healing first.

A lot of those hands are young ones. Kindergartens, schools and student volunteers come to plant, trap and monitor, and what they carry away is not only a day outdoors - some leave with conservation careers. Learn more at wildwaikawa.co.nz

Nothing on the land works alone. Plant a stream bank and the shade, the cooler water and the kōura [freshwater crayfish] all follow. Naturalist John Muir, pictured in Yosemite Valley, put it this way:

Three years earlier, Ngāti Tūwharetoa chief Horonuku Te Heuheu Tūkino IV signed a deed so the sacred peaks of Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe and Ruapehu could never be sold - the beginning of Aotearoa’s first national park, and the world’s fourth.

Today in Aotearoa we have 13 national parks, each one hitched to the people who hold them. #nationalparks #kaitiakitanga #biometrust

Most farmers who want to plant trees hit the same wall. Pine earns carbon credits fast but does little for the land. Natives restore it, cost more and earn less. At the end of a dirt road near Elsthorpe, Greg and Rachel Hart found a third way.

Twenty years on: 135,000 trees, fertiliser needs halved, more carbon stored than the farm emits. Farmers now drive from across the country to walk the rows, including the Mangaroa Farms crew, who took the plan home to the Hutt Valley.

Wendell Berry wrote these words in 1977, in his book "The Unsettling of America". He then spent nearly fifty more years on the same few hundred acres - working them with horses, writing more than forty books, and constantly refusing to be somewhere more important.

Berry's writing was an endeavor in slowing down, and noticing his surroundings – whether these were trees, people, or the imprint of a breeze on a hill. His argument never changed: land is not a resource, it is a relationship. Learn more at berrycenter.org/
