Making a second brief return to twitter to report that @TBQuarterly sent me a (very nice!) rejection letter for a poem I wrote about tacos, which I am using as permission to just throw the thing on Medium along with several paragraphs of commentary medium.com/@Birdbassador/obj…

Why do conferences/journals sometimes ask reviewers for a novelty/originality score? The only thing it does is create bad incentive structures. Reject work if it’s plagiarized, sure, but why on earth should a reviewer care about “originality” beyond that?

Christ and there’s a “significance” field too. This is what I get for just reviewing free form and only checking the actual review form at the last minute. Just give me a text box and a final score, thanks.

Phenomenal. Bar-tailed Godwit has broken its own record: a first-year bird (five months old!) has flown 13,560 km—just shy of the direct flight limit of a Boeing 787—from Alaska to Tasmania, seemingly non-stop, in just 11 days (avg. speed: c.51 km/hr). facebook.com/437949496218757…

I kept this to sub 2k words, that’s gotta count for something. Also I am over a week behind on work emails.

in scooby doo, the desire to get those teens away from the pirate gold or whatever is, in a libidinal sense, more "real" than the villain's identity as an inn keeper etc. so, the mask, to me, is precisely what fred paradoxically "reveals" when he removes the visage of the monster

According to The Inner Bird by Gary W. Kaiser, the true bird is ”a strange goblin-like creature”, ”a puppeteer behind a screen of feathers.” Can’t really disagree here.

it’s a testament to charlotte the spider’s inherent goodness that she can say “salutations” and we think it’s endearing instead of being the start of an e-mail where they try to convince me that the IRS needs iTunes gift cards

I will be giving this talk in mere minutes. I was convinced by well-meaning friends to cut out the five slides I had about Jacques Lacan and the 12 slides about Gettier problems in epistemology #ieeevis
