Overconfidence is a killer.

Bitcoiners’ blind spot is the absolute confidence in themselves. Let me explain.
All Bitcoiners would agree that Bitcoin is the best (and likely only) digital money because it’s backed by Proof-of-Work and is highly trust-minimized. Note that we say Bitcoin is TRUST MINIMIZED and NEVER TRUSTLESS, because even the smartest man in the world would know that the world is too complex for any single person to navigate, so we have to trust SOMETHING and SOMEONE at some point. Whether it’s where to download the first Bitcoin Core client, to running your own node, to the Internet protocols that Core is running on (that you’re not isolated to some weird corner/partition of the network), to trusting that the majority of the hash rate (or the majority of the supply) isn’t controlled by some hidden entity and the Bitcoin protocol can’t be changed under you, even if you enter a coma for 10 years, to trusting that the software project is properly maintained and its devs continually vetted, etc.
Everyone has the humility to see that.
But when it comes to SELF-CUSTODY, people become arrogant. They suddenly think they can verify every single layer of the self-custody stack they use. Just because you’re an anon hiding in the crowd? Just because you have some clanker (like the attackers don’t have better ones)?!
They don’t apply the same principles that make Bitcoin great to their own security. That you cannot trust any single chain of dependencies.
Tell me if that’s not cognitive dissonance.
The truth is, if you’re someone who’s able to see both the strengths and weaknesses of Bitcoin, you’re likely someone who will embrace multisig. Only someone arrogant will think they’re too good to be hacked, that Bitcoin is too perfect to ever fail.
One of Bitcoin’s weaknesses is that you need to be able to reach at least one honest node for Bitcoin to be self-sovereign. (Gold can be faked too, but verifying it doesn’t depend on reaching an honest network, because you can test it against physics. For Bitcoin, reaching an honest node is a hard requirement.)
Similarly, for self-custody to truly be safe in the really long term, you must have enough independent and honest hardware + software stacks to ensure you (and your family when you die) will not get hacked and sign away your generational wealth. You cannot trust any single stack, regardless of what someone on X tells you.
Embrace multisig. Embrace multiple, independent chains of dependencies. Multisig is the Proof-of-Work of self-custody.
