One of my college friends landed a IB job in manhattan right after graduating in 2010. He was the highest paid one among the friend group. Started at 180k with a 25k sign on bonus. He decided to live in jersey city and commute daily. This year I went to his retirement party and he’s 38. It’s really all about the choices you make. He’s looking to get married now and have kids and all.

I am getting lots of incoming questions about the public execution of Nidal Hasan, mostly because I have been outspoken on wanting public executions for over a decade. My position is simple: Executions should be public and brutal, not private and medicalized. They are the ultimate example of the state's monopoly on violence, and the only way to keep that from running out of control is to confront voters with the trade they have made every single time, that they might have appropiate confidence or revulsion in the institution. This is not new thinking. George Washington thought the same. The way we have shifted from hanging to firing squads to doctors quietly injecting chemicals that send our worst gently off to sleep is awful and dystopian, a total short-circuiting of important feedback mechanisms. It makes needless executions more likely, not less so. People who demean this as barbaric or yucky miss the whole point. It doesn't somehow become torture or inhumane (as the UN is suddenly claiming) just because we decline to hide the act behind a curtain. And then there are those who suggest any revel in the death of those who truly deserve it is an indicator of a broken or diseased mind. To the contrary. It is normal, good, and aligned with our natural and national order. That it has not been done here in 60 years is an indictment in and of itself. And that is without even getting into the fact that men were not hung for stealing horse, but that horses may not be stolen. "I would to God that one of the most attrocious in each State was hung in Gibbets, up on a gallows five times as high as the one prepared by Haman. No punishment, in my opinion, is too great for the Man, who can build his greatness upon his Country’s ruin." - George Washington, 1778

Facetimed my wife after I crossed the finish line. Wept. This was definitely one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I fell off a roof at 18, and have had 3 back surgeries in 4 places since. I want my kids to know that they can do hard things even when it seems impossible.

Remember when Eminem was challenged to rhyme with “silver” and actually delivered? 🐐 After a viral claim that the word had no rhymes, Slim Shady put his creativity to work with a lengthy response. Years earlier, he had done something similar with the word “orange.”

Attention Young Men: I am surrounded by 20 year old girls in my life that are smart, capable, hard working and cute. Nobody is dating them. Not sure what the deal is, but I don’t get it. Step 1: Stop playing video games Step 2: Head to great clips and get that lettuce cleaned up Step 3: Hit a shower (when dating hygiene is critical) Step 4: Go clean your car Step 5: Sign up for a yoga class Step 6: Go to the yoga class Step 7: Ask a cute for her phone number at yoga class (yes you can meet girls IRL and not just on the apps - 10/10 the Dirt Dog highly recommends) Step 8: Follow up within 2 days with a phone call and ask them out for this coming weekend Friday or Saturday night. Step 9: IMPORTANT - come up with a good game plane for date night. Get a dinner reservation, get an activity planned. Let them know in advance what you are doing so they can dress appropriately. I know you are gunna roll off the couch and head to date night, but they are not. They are going to stress about what to wear and call at least 6 different people on FaceTime to ask their opinion. Step 10: I highly recommend you bring flowers to the door step. I’m not covering that you go to the doorstep, because if you don’t do that you have no hope here. Women want men to date them. You don’t need to break the bank on flowers. Head to Trader Joe’s. Grab 2 different kinds of flowers. If you don’t know what matches find the closest looking lady to your mom at TJ’s and ask her. Wrap the 2 flowers into 1 bouquet with paper. Bonus Points you can cut open a TJ bag and use that as the paper. Step 11: Be a gentleman on the date. She isn’t there to hear your life story. Ask her about her. For every 1 question you answer, ask her 3. Open Doors, pay for the meal, be polite. Provided you follow most of this guideline you are highly likely to get yourself an opportunity for date number 2. Keep going until you find someone that you can’t imagine not being around all the time. That’s when you have found a good one for you. My life is complete with my wife as my companion. I wish you the same fortune in life. Happy Hunting.

In 1999 climbers found George Mallory's body high on Everest, 75 years after he vanished, and the clothes he died in were still on him. They were wool, silk and cotton. In 2006 somebody put on an exact copy and climbed the mountain in it. For decades the story had been that Mallory and Irvine were doomed by their kit. Tweed jackets and woolly jumpers at 28,000 feet. Brave amateurs, dressed for a grouse moor. The body told a different story. Mallory was wearing 8 thin layers. Silk next to the skin, then fine wool, then more silk, more wool, a flannel shirt, and a windproof cotton outer woven so tightly it turned the snow. Four British universities took fragments from the body and rebuilt the whole outfit, thread for thread. A mountaineer called Graham Hoyland wore it on Everest. He reported that it was warm. It was also lighter than the modern down suit his companions were wearing. The silk layers slid over the wool, so he could move his arms freely, which a man in a padded plastic suit cannot. The wool held its warmth when damp with sweat. He said he would have been comfortable going for the summit in it. The researchers concluded the clothing was fully up to the job. So the gear of 1924 was not the weak point. A sheep and a silkworm had solved the problem of the coldest place on earth, at less weight, before anyone had invented nylon. Then we spent a century replacing it with petroleum and told ourselves the men who came before were underdressed.

🇺🇸 In 2022, a remarkably rare white-coated black bear was captured by a trail camera in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Often called a “spirit bear,” it became the first recorded sighting of a white black bear in Michigan’s history.

Here's a photo that is unlike any other of a rocket launch. This was the moment the Falcon Heavy rocket flew past the moon- a launch photo that began as a disappointment and I treated like an astrophoto to recover. How it was captured and a link to the print shop in the thread:

Today my @bot - Joined a Zoom call, reviewed a contract and caught 4 terms that were never agreed to. - Logged into my SBA loan and set autopay through 2050 - Scanned hundreds of emails to find where a credit card was shipped - Found hundreds of leads, enriched them, emailed them, and set the follow-ups - Got a Starlink refund I tried to chase for weeks - Sent 200 zaps to people on @cluborange - Negotiated a 50% discount on a medical bill. It easily saved me $1,000 in a day. I’m officially a grokbot maximalist.
