Can a duodenal-jejunal bypass liner improve diabetes control and weight loss in people with obesity — without surgery?
In this multicentre, double-blind, sham-controlled trial of 320 patients, the EndoBarrier group achieved greater reductions in HbA1c and significantly more weight loss at 12 months than the sham group.
📉 HbA1c: −1.10% vs −0.28%
⚖️ Total weight loss: 7.7% vs 2.1%
🎯 HbA1c ≤7%: 28.3% vs 9.4%
However, 9.4% experienced device-related serious adverse events, highlighting an important balance between efficacy and safety.

🏥 Preoperative low-energy diets for patients with a body mass index> 30 kg/m2 undergoing non-bariatric surgery: pilot feasibility randomized clinical trial and a systematic review and meta-analysis of efficacy data
Of 91 randomized patients, 81.7 per cent adhered to the 3-week intervention, and those in the low-energy diet group lost more weight (mean difference 4.5 kg, 95 per cent confidence interval -5.6 to -3.5). Meta-analysis of 5 RCTs demonstrated a non-significant 19 per cent relative risk reduction in postoperative morbidity favouring the intervention (relative risk 0.81, 0.52 to 1.26, P=0.351).
