ukandeu.ac.uk/should-the-uk-… I published this blog 4 years ago, almost to the day As Andy Burnham floats ambitious options for UK links with the EU, it seems right to give it a second airing Should the UK join the United States of Europe, or be its closest ally and trading partner?

politico.eu/article/britain-… UK/Germany mull ambitious defence plans UK will lead development of a new cruise missile Germany will develop a hypersonic glide vehicle taken to its launching height by rocket ready But will Germany join and fund the UK's new fighter jet programme?

thehill.com/homenews/adminis… A new poll shows Trump’s disapproval rating reached a record high, less than 48 hours before the mid-terms. The poll found that 60% did not approve of Trump’s job performance, a new high across both of his terms as president. His approval rating hit 40%.

Why I think Burnham should not apologise for slavery.

President Eisenhower, 31 October, 1956. A Republican in a mould which puts Trump to shame.

thetimes.com/uk/politics/art… Making the argument for the EU is about making a political argument as well as an economic one. The EU is already a functioning economic union but its evolution into a political union is still an aspiration. Do we share that aspiration?

Trump is pressuring Ukraine to concede to Putin, a known adversary aligned with China, Iran and North Korea against American interests. We must not help Putin divide us from our allies. A stronger Ukraine and united NATO are vital to America’s security and economic interests. wsj.com/opinion/coddling-put…

politico.eu/article/eu-set-t… This is a cautionary tale about Ursula von der Leyen's pretensions to omnipotence. The fact that she thought links with Canada labelled as associate EU Membership might be a good idea did not mean that EU Member States would fall in line. They didn't.

The UK is announcing its largest ever financial support package for Ukraine: £10bn, including £7bn in economic support over three years and a £3bn increase in export finance capacity for defence. An additional £500m will strengthen Ukraine’s air defences this winter 🇬🇧🤝🇺🇦

blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandp… Burnham says the UK could join the single market without a referendum In this blog I suggested this to Starmer providing the UK Parliament approved new EU rules & could trigger a speedy exit if the EU adopted laws the UK could not accept @PJDunleavy

theguardian.com/politics/202… Opening a debate on links with the EU is a good thing to do Free movement is a key issue and it is right to address it I fear that - like the referendum debate - this new debate will be confined to EU trade, rather than EU as a federal union in the making.

Burnham's talk of a return to free movement and joining the single market or the EU is likely to produce its maximum political returns before the nitty gritty of trade-offs and financial contributions to the EU kick in. This makes me think a general election next year is likely.

Burnham: freedom of movement not a red line, but “I can’t see myself ever recommending anything that would involve joining the euro.." Hard to imagine the UK joining the EU without a euro commitment Hint at single market not EU? No referendum needed for single market, says B.
🔺 EXCLUSIVE: Andy Burnham has opened the door to Britain readopting the European Union’s free movement rules, arguing that an “honest discussion” is needed, reports @benrileysmith thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

The most important thing today is that Starlink and Starshield operations have been restored to the speeds we had before the restrictions. The speeds are now where they need to be. The restoration began overnight, and by this morning, speeds were already sufficient. This matters: for our frontline logistics, for defending Ukraine against jet-powered “shaheds.” I thank all Americans and all our partners who took this seriously and truly helped – members of Congress, senators, all the media, the State Department, and the President. Protecting lives matters.

The UK's ban on trade with Israeli settlements, announced in September 2026, is grounded in international law, and has the stated aim of upholding the international commitment to a two-state solution. Chatham House's latest policy paper sets out targeted steps that the UK, with like-minded partners, can take to safeguard the viability of a sovereign Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel. Replying to @carlbildt
@carlbildt spot-on here. Europe (EU + UK) has GDP roughly 10 times Russia's. Putin's aggression is an existential threat to democratic Europe . Leaders should say honestly to voters that helping Ukraine & boosting defence means sacrificing other desirable spending
Europe faces a major challenge financially supporting 🇺🇦 with the unrelenting 🇷🇺 attacks taking a heavier toll on the economy of the country. It’s big numbers, but in reality the 0.2% or so should be perfectly possible within the 5% of GDP already committed for defence. It’s a question of political will.
