๐Ÿ”ฅ MAYDAY! IS YOUR COMMAND TEAM READY? When a firefighter transmits a Mayday, the incident commander must manage two critical priorities: rescuing the firefighter in trouble AND maintaining the fire control operations necessary to stabilize the incident. But successful Mayday management starts long before the Mayday is transmitted. ๐Ÿš’ BLUE CARD MAYDAY MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP โ€” TWO UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIES! ๐Ÿ“ Winston-Salem, North Carolina ๐Ÿ“… December 10โ€“11, 2026 ๐Ÿ“ Worcester, Massachusetts ๐Ÿ“… January 25โ€“26, 2027 ๐Ÿ“… January 27โ€“28, 2027 This two-day workshop examines real-world Mayday events, lessons learned from firefighter line-of-duty deaths, Mayday research, and the practical application of the Blue Card Incident Command System. We'll focus on both preventing Maydays through effective command and strategic decision-making and managing the incident when something goes wrong. As Alan Brunacini reminded us, "You must be doing everything right before something goes wrong." Don't wait for a Mayday to find out if your command system is ready. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Register today at BlueCardTraining.com! #BlueCard #MaydayManagement #IncidentCommand #FirefighterSafety #FireCommand #FireServiceTraining

๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ”ฅ WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE SPLIT FIRE & EMS? Every few years, the conversation about separating fire and EMS resurfaces, often driven by promises of better service and savings. But like any divorce, splitting up isn't always simple. And someone usually pays the price. ๐Ÿ’ฐ Here's a question worth asking: What happens to fire suppression funding when EMS revenue is no longer part of the equation? In our latest featured article at B Shifter, John Vance takes a closer look at the financial realities of separating fire and EMS, the potential unintended consequences, and what's at stake for fire departments and the communities they protect. Before we talk about splitting up, we need to understand who's paying the bills. ๐Ÿ“– READ THE FULL ARTICLE: bshifter.com/what-would-happโ€ฆ #BShifter #FireService #FireChief #EMS #FireDepartment #FireServiceLeadership #PublicSafety

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿš’ NEW B SHIFTER PODCAST: SHANE RAY SAYS, โ€œLET IT RUN!โ€ When sprinklers are doing their job, don't let the fire department become the problem! This week on the B Shifter Podcast, we're joined by Shane Ray, President of the National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA), for an important conversation about big-box fires, mega-warehouses, and the critical decisions incident commanders make when sprinkler systems are operating. ๐Ÿ’ฆ Pull Up. Hook Up. Pump Up. We dig into NFPA 13E, FDCs, fire pumps, sprinkler control rooms, valve operations, and why shutting down a sprinkler system too early can turn a successful save into a multimillion-dollar loss. Understanding how sprinkler systems workโ€”and how to support themโ€”is essential to safe, effective fireground operations. ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ If you're an IC, company officer, or fire chief, this is one you don't want to miss! ๐ŸŽง LISTEN: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcasโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ“บ WATCH: youtu.be/JcYjtA9H7rw](youtu.be/JcYjtA9H7rw #BShifter #BlueCard #ShaneRay #NFSA #FireSprinklers #IncidentCommand #FireService #FiregroundOperations #FirefighterTraining

๐Ÿš’ 40+ YEARS OF FIRE COMMAND. THE FOUNDATION OF BLUE CARD. For more than 40 years, the principles of Alan Brunaciniโ€™s Fire Command have provided firefighters and incident commanders with a systematic approach to managing emergency incidents. Today, those same principles serve as the foundation of the Blue Card Incident Command System. At the heart of that system are the Eight Functions of Command: 1. Deployment โ€“ Getting the right resources to the right place. 2. Assume, Confirm & Position Command โ€“ Establishing command and maintaining a clear command presence. 3. Situation Evaluation โ€“ Understanding what's happening, what's changing, and what comes next. 4. Strategy & Incident Action Planning โ€“ Developing and communicating a plan based on conditions and risk. 5. Communications โ€“ Keeping information clear, concise, and consistent. 6. Organization โ€“ Building an incident organization that matches the size and complexity of the event. 7. Review, Evaluate & Revise โ€“ Continuously assessing conditions and adjusting the plan. 8. Continue, Support & Terminate Command โ€“ Supporting ongoing operations and bringing the incident to a safe, organized conclusion. These aren't just eight items to memorize. They are the foundation of a repeatable, trainable, and measurable system for managing the hazard zone. The fireground has changed over the past 40 years. Our buildings, tactics, equipment, and understanding of fire behavior have evolved. But the need for strong, disciplined incident command has never changed. #BlueCard #FireCommand #IncidentCommand #FireServiceLeadership #BShifter #CommandTraining

WHAT ARE WE PASSING ON? Today's firefighters are smarter, better trained, and more knowledgeable than ever. But there's one thing experience provides that can't be learned in a classroom: perspective. As experienced firefighters and officers, we have a responsibility to pass along more than skills. We must explain the "WHY" behind what we do, reinforce risk management, and have the courage to say "NO" when the risk outweighs the reward. Leadership isn't about being liked. It's about doing what's rightโ€”even when it's unpopular. The next generation isn't the problem. They have incredible potential. Our job is to give them the perspective to make even better decisions than we did. ๐Ÿ“– Read the full article: bshifter.com/passing-the-torโ€ฆ #FireServiceLeadership #IncidentCommand #FirefighterSafety #BlueCard #Leadership

In Ed Hartinโ€™s October 10-Minute Training, we head to Brick Township, New Jersey, where crews arrive at a residential fire with smoke showing from an open front door. This month's drill challenges you to read the fire, identify critical factors, and make sound initial strategic decisions using actual incident video. Take 10 minutes to sharpen your fire-reading and size-up skills! ๐Ÿ‘‰ Check out the FREE training at BShifter.com: bshifter.com/10-minute-trainโ€ฆ #BShifter #BlueCard #FireCommand #IncidentCommand #FirefighterTraining #FireBehavior

๐Ÿ”ฅ BIG BOX WORKSHOP IN PHOENIX! ๐Ÿš’ We're kicking off a two-day Blue Card Big Box Workshop today at the Alan V. Brunacini Command Training Center in Phoenix, Arizona! We're excited to have Shane Ray, President of the National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA), joining us as we take a deep dive into the unique challenges of managing fires in large commercial buildings, warehouses, and distribution centers. Not long ago, a 150,000-square-foot big box store was considered enormous. Today, fulfillment centers and warehouses routinely exceed 1 MILLION square feet! These buildings are different. Their fire protection systems, life safety profiles, critical factors, and tactical considerations demand a different approach to incident command. Over the next two days, we'll focus on: ๐Ÿš’ Understanding fire sprinkler and protection systems ๐Ÿš’ Identifying Big Box critical factors ๐Ÿš’ Strategic decision-making and risk management ๐Ÿš’ Division/Sector operations and tactical supervision ๐Ÿš’ Applying what we've learned through realistic Big Box command simulations The goal isn't simply to fight a bigger fire. It's to understand the building, work with its fire protection systems, and make better strategic and tactical decisions. A big thank you to Shane Ray and the NFSA for their continued partnership and commitment to firefighter safety and education! #BlueCard #BShifter #BigBoxWorkshop #NFSA #FireSprinklers #IncidentCommand #FireServiceTraining #FirefighterSafety @NFSAorg @chiefrays
