When I turned 40, I'd been a salesman for 20 years. After 40, a SAG actor in film & TV, a radio DJ, a talk radio producer, did documentary & video game voiceover, in a working rock band, and a multiple produced screenwriter. All because I was told I couldn't. Learn from this.

OK. Twilight Zone time. Just got a call from a publishing company that I sent the first version of "Jessica's Vampire Diary " to... a very rough verson... 35 years ago. I told them they were a tad bit late.

Walked out into my living room yesterday… to the distinct smell of natural gas. Traced to my gas stove. Opened doors and windows. Called plumber. He was terrific. Chased it down, had it fixed in no time. Under 800 dollars (Tennessee price)… if I was in California? About $3000.

Without going into specifics yet because nothing is real until it finishes post, I just had the best last 6 days of my career. Pretty amazing. Thank You God.

Your old scripts are never dead. Update them for tech and cultural references yearly and keep them looking new and pull them out when the opportunity arises. I have one, a nearly 30 year old one, in serious play right now. Sometimes it takes decades for your hard work to pay off.

Had two weeks to “polish” a feature script for a producer and a streamer. Ended up with a page one rewrite… which they finally admitted it needed. 12 to 16 hour days to get it done by… today. Just sent it off. Got a week off, then new job. Comedy. Great premise. Love my job.

45 pages into an assignment rewrite. Got in the ZONE. Started the day on page 12. Did I eat today? I have no idea. I love my job.

Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t succeed. It is absolutely possible. It doesn’t happen overnight. It takes hard work, patience, perseverance, networking… you can’t give up. From my first written script to my first produced film? 12 years. Keep writing.

During Covid I sat down and wrote my only novel. For someone who’s been screenwriting for decades it was a lot harder than I thought. Today the publisher sent my first royalty check. Getting paid for doing something you love is a bonus. amazon.com/dp/1941015743/ref…

This business is like a yoyo. Up and down. Just had another project vanish. One minute it's real and working. The next, some exec pulls the plug. The next, another project revives. You can't count on anything until an audience can see it. Yet... I still love it. Go figure.

Every time I finish a draft of a script and send it to the producer, my wife knows. I let out kind of a scream of victory. That can heard two floors down. I screamed today.

This book changed my life! Thank you, Bob!
I want to thank whoever it is that’s made a huge run on my screenwriting book this month. It means a lot. I don’t promote it endlessly here because… that’s not why I’m here. I don’t think I’ve promoted it here in months. But once in a while… especially since it seems to be selling well right now… It’s called “That’s Not the Way It Works” and is mostly about how to be in the business of screenwriting… with some craft advice thrown it. And if you’ve read it, thank you. If you haven’t. I’ll encourage you to. Available through most book stores, Amazon, and all the Ebook sites. Thanks again.

Every once in a while someone I know will watch something I wrote then send screenshots, surprised I was also in it. I love my job.

What do you say to a multi-million selling novelist who says, “I have a great idea and I think it’s something we can do together.”? Then he tells you the idea and it’s not great… it’s earth shatteringly amazing. Thank You God. You say, “Let’s go.”

Last night... we got to see Squeeze at the Ryman in Nashville. One of my bucket list bands. Didn't let me down. Incredible show. Glenn Tillbrook is a genius.

At the Ryman in Nashville to see Squeeze. And the opener was... Adam Ant. All 71 years of him. It was a fabulous punk extravaganza. Loud fuzzy, fun. Pure punk. I was surprised and pleased.

Need something fun and different to read? One review called it “A funny Stranger Things.” It is my only novel (so far) and the most fun I ever had writing anything. Available on Amazon. Jessica’s Vampire Diary. Unlike any Vampire story out there. Love to hear what you think.

Screenwriting is not a zero sum game. One person’s success doesn’t keep another from succeeding. Success comes from, ultimately, the words on the page and the craft and creativity used to put them there. Any success by others needs to be applauded and encouraged.
