If you think you’re following Jesus, but you’ve written off an entire political party, religion, or group of people as hopeless, you do not understand the gospel. Jesus came to save sinners, not just the kinds of sinners you understand, agree with, or find easy to love. No group is beyond the reach of grace, and Christians are called to love EVERYONE including our enemies. Not tolerate them. Love them. Loving your enemy takes true faith!! Read Jonah. Then read the Good Samaritan. The Samaritans and Jews were not simply people who disagreed. There was deep religious and ethnic hostility between them. Samaritans had even desecrated the Jewish temple, and violent conflict existed between the two communities. And when a Jewish lawyer asked Jesus, "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus deliberately made the Samaritan the one who showed mercy. Then He said: "Go and do likewise." -Luke 10:37 If your theology gives you permission to hate the people Jesus commands you to love, something has gone terribly wrong.

Every day you live apart from Christ, you are not neutral toward God. You are living in active rebellion against God. The gospel is not God asking rebels to become a little better. It is the King commanding us to repent and offering mercy through Jesus Christ before He pours out His righteous wrath upon unrepentant sinners.

On October 8th-11th I will be going into Southern Correctional Institution in Troy, NC with Kairos Prison ministry. This will be Kairos’ 1st ministry weekend at that institution!!! We will be ministering to a new group of 42 men to display the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ in hopes of growing the Christian community within the prison! I have previously done 4 of these events and I can testify that God changes lives through Kairos behind those prison walls! Because this is the first of many events at SCI, the initial cost is substantial. What does celebrating Halloween teach children and what are we teaching every child who comes to our door? As parents, we spend the entire year trying to protect kids from fear, violence, death, darkness, and evil. Then we decorate our homes with those very things, hand kids costumes inspired by them, and call it harmless fun. I used to love Halloween, scary movies and the macabre/weird…. But for the life of me, now I have no idea why. I grew up listening to the misfits and Rob Zombie. My favorite movies were the Friday the 13th movies and Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Looking back, I can also see how all of it made me more comfortable with things like death and suicide. Things that should have felt horrifying started to feel normal, familiar, even entertaining. I didn’t recognize what that constant exposure to darkness was doing to the way I saw life and death. In hindsight, an atheist being drawn towards evil things doesn’t really even make sense. A question I never asked myself was, “If I know God doesn’t exist, why do I like evil things?” It seems like I was just rebelling against the possibility that God did exist so that I could feel comforted in living the way I want to live without fear of consequences. Even just 2 years ago I had scary decorations up that I would tell our girls, “if they scare you, just don’t look at them.” DECORATIONS IN OUR HOME AND TELLING OUR GIRLS NOT TO LOOK AT THEM IF THEY’RE SCARED. Terrible and shameful. Then Jesus came into my life and showed me how wrong it was. How wrong I was! I purged the house of all Halloween decor, scary movies and costumes. Straight to the trash. I even burned some old paintings that I made. Take a minute and really think about what we’re telling God when we celebrate Halloween. And think about what we are teaching kids. We tell them Jesus is the Light of the world and then celebrate darkness. We tell them not to be afraid and then decorate homes with things designed to frighten them. We teach them that death is an enemy and then turn death, demons, graves, blood, and horror into entertainment. We tell them to flee from evil and then hang up images of evil into the home and call it fun. If you think it’s harmless, go walk through Home Depot and see the grotesque displays, then think about what decorations used to be when we were kids. It’s gotten out of control and we’re throwing our children to the wolves when we accept it as normal. At some point, Christian parents have to be willing to say: not in this house. Kids are watching what parents celebrate. They are learning from what we laugh at, what we decorate with, what we spend money on, and what we call harmless. Following Jesus should actually change what we love. There should be a visible difference between darkness and light. Parents should be willing to choose Christ even when the culture is walking in the opposite direction. We won’t be celebrating Halloween anymore and I hope you’ll consider it too. ♥️ There are plenty of ways to give kids joy, candy, costumes, laughter, and memories without teaching them to celebrate darkness. Choose the Light. Choose Jesus! ✝️ “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living.
