Hope is not an overload strategy.
Reliable systems define their worst-case behavior in advance: what gets processed first, what gets delayed, and what gets discarded when resources run short.
In high-pressure environments, those decisions need to be deliberate, measurable, and built into the system.

The secret to getting your first open-source PR merged? Keep the scope small. 🎯
One file. One specific task. A clear explanation of what changed and why.
Arnaud Becheler explains how focused contributions make reviews easier, reduce risk, and help newcomers build trust with maintainers. You don't need to rewrite a library to make it better.

What's the difference between a technically excellent C++ project and an excellent project?
Sometimes, it's as simple as having good documentation and showing contributors where to begin.
Mateusz Pusz explores this important issue in this highlight from Using std::cpp 2026.

What if C++ could help diagnose dangerous code without abandoning the language's flexibility?
That's the motivation behind C++ Profiles: applying additional rules to identify problematic patterns while preserving the meaning of programs that satisfy those rules.
A potential path toward safer modern C++.

Keep the last 1,000 latency samples as doubles. Standard C++ has two options. std::deque works, but on libstdc++ it allocates and frees memory every 64 samples. Or you write your own ring buffer and hope you got the index math right
Still no ring buffer in the standard 🧵👇
Boost Blueprint 150: Boost.CircularBuffer
boost::circular_buffer allocates its memory once, up front. When it’s full, each new sample replaces the oldest one. Slide a window over a million samples and it never allocates again
You can index into it like an array, and the buffer handles the wraparound for you. Standard algorithms work on it as is. Need one contiguous array for an API that takes a pointer? linearize() puts the elements in order, oldest first, in place
Use it for rolling averages, recent event logs, undo history, audio buffers

🚨 Performance bottleneck hiding in your multi-threaded code?
It could be false sharing.

std::vector<bool> packs 8 flags into every byte, but then forgets it’s bits we’re dealing with
No &, no |, no count(), no find_first(). std::bitset has the operators and count(), but only if the size is known at compile time. So you pick: a runtime size, or the operations 🧵👇
Boost Blueprint 149: Boost.DynamicBitset
boost::dynamic_bitset<> is sized at runtime and has std::bitset’s operators: &, |, ^, ~, shifts, count(), any() and none(). Set operations run a whole block at a time
find_first() and find_next() walk only the set bits, skipping empty blocks whole
It also does subset tests, resize, push_back and string conversion. Use it for handling feature flags, permissions and visited sets in graph searches

HPC optimization isn't only about finishing computations faster.
Better utilization can also mean better energy efficiency.
If you can significantly increase how much useful work your system performs, you can reduce wasted compute cycles and potentially cut the energy cost of your applications.

The real challenge in high-performance computing isn't just launching parallel tasks. It's coordinating them efficiently.
With a uniform asynchronous API, HPX can manage coordination across different execution resources within one runtime system.
That creates opportunities to improve utilization without forcing developers to manage every interaction independently.

callbacks.erase(std::find(callbacks.begin(), callbacks.end(), cb));
Won't compile. You can't compare two std::function objects
So homemade event systems invent subscription IDs. Miss one unsubscribe and you call into a destroyed object 🧵👇
Boost Blueprint 147: Boost.Signals2
connect() gives you a connection handle. Disconnect it yourself, wrap it in a scoped_connection that disconnects at end of scope, or pause it with a shared_connection_block
A slot can track a shared_ptr to its owner. When the owner is destroyed, the slot stops firing and gets cleaned up. No calls into dead objects
Signal operations are thread-safe: one thread can connect or disconnect while another fires the signal. And if slots return values, you decide how they're combined

A reliable shutdown shouldn't feel like guesswork.
One stop request. One scope boundary. One predictable teardown path.
That simple principle helps make cancellation behavior easier to reason about and reduces the risk of work continuing after it should have stopped. Structured concurrency makes lifecycle management part of the architecture itself.
